Mark L. Edwards
Mark L. Edwards, 42, Gower, formerly of Independence, passed away Tuesday,
January 29, 2002 at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mark was born May 18, 1959 in Lawrence, KS. He grew up in Independence where he
graduated from Truman High School in 1977. Mark attended Bailey Technical School in Kansas
City.
On May 20, 1984 he was united in marriage to Karla Andrews. After their marriage
they lived in Kansas City until 1996 when they moved to Gower to make their home.
Mark worked at Rampart Security in Parkville and owned and operated Excel Security,
along with Tracy Branstuder in Kansas City. Mark also worked at Firemaster and
Simplex/Grinnel both in Kansas City. He was a volunteer for the Gower Fire Department,
where he served as Assistant Fire Chief for one year, and also was a First Responder. Mark
was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Independence.
He is survived by his wife, Karla of the home, three sons, Mark Aaron Edwards, Blue
Springs and Brandon Lee and Justin Scott of the home; a grandson, Brice; his parents,
Francis and Peggy Edwards, Kansas City; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kevin and Anne
Edwards, Grain Valley and Scott and Shelly Edwards, Salina, OK; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 2, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral
Home with burial in the Allen Cemetery.
Helen L. Grenier
Helen L. Grenier, 63, of St. Joseph, passed away January 26, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Grenier was born August 3, 1938, in Kansas City. She was a former quality
assurance employee for Sherwood Medical and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in St.
Joseph.
She was preceded in death b
Survivors include a son, Robert Clevenger, Cameron; a daughter, Judy Bottoroff,
Gower; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial service was held Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Calvary Baptist Church,
St. Joseph. The family requests donations to Calvary Baptist Church. Arrangements by
Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron.
Stanley Pytel
Stanley Pytel 78, of Kansas City, died January 28, 2002 at his residence. Mr.
Pytel was born on July 27, 1923 in New York, NY where he attended school and graduated.
Mr. Pytel was a Navy Veteran of WWII. He retired from Trans World Airlines after 43
years of service. He was a member of the Ararat Flying Fez, The Rising Sun Masonic Lodge,
The Eastern Star Barry Chapter 369 and he was a 32nd Degree Mason.
On March 23, 1970 he married the former Betty Hawley Stevens of Plattsburg,
who survives of the home. Mr. Pytel was a very kind and patient man.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Amelia Pytel.
Additional survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Diana Greenleas Jackson and
James Jackson of Kansas City; two grandchildren, Paul and Pamela Greenleas; a sister,
Josephine Bagan of New York; and a niece Andrea Marchese of Patterson, NY.
Funeral services are being held today, Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at 11:30, at the Cox
Funeral Home with burial scheduled to be in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg.
Visitation will be held from 10:30am until 11:30am prior to the services. The family
suggests memorial gifts to the North Care Hospice.
Mary S. DeMoss
Mary S. DeMoss, 94, Plattsburg died January 26, 2002 at the Liberty
Hospital.
Born in Kingsport, TN on January 30, 1907. She graduated from the Grayson School
and formerly lived in Turney and Cameron.
Mary married William Reede DeMoss on August 6, 1927. He preceded her in death in
1985. She was a homemaker and a member of the Cameron United Methodist Church.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were her parents, William and
Lenora Carroll.
Survivors include a son James DeMoss of Overland Park, KS; two
daughters, Carol Carlile of Broken Arrow, OK and Martha Gum of Kansas City, KS; 10
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 at the Poland-Thompson Funeral
Home with burial in Cameron's Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Cameron United Methodist Church Building Fund.
David L. Snodgrass, Jr.
David L. Snodgrass Jr., 93, of Plattsburg formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday,
January 25, 2002, at a Plattsburg health care center.
Born December 9, 1908, in Plattsburg he later moved to St. Joseph in 1936
until he returned to Plattsburg in 1999.
Mr. Snodgrass retired in 1968 from Quaker Oats as the credit manager.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of St. Joseph where he served as an
Elder and a Deacon. Mr. Snodgrass was also very involved in the Scottish Rite
Freemasonry in St. Joseph.
On October 1, 1931, he married the former Almina Parr. She preceded him in death in
1990.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, Loren and Georgia (Bradley) Snodgrass.
Survivors include two sons, David Snodgrass III of Stewartsville and James Snodgrass
of Wheaton, IL; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and interment were held Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at Memorial
Park Cemetery, St. Joseph with the Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg in charge of arrangements.
Walter E. Schwarz
Walter E. Schwarz, 93, of Kansas City, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2002, in
Gower at the Gower Health Care Center.
Born near Parkville on November 14, 1908, Mr. Schwarz was a lifelong resident of
Platte and Clay Counties. He was a dairy farmer in the Gashland area of Clay County for
many years. He received one of the first Progressive Farming Awards in the early 1940s. He
retired from the farm in 1968.
Mr. Schwarz was a member of the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #13 AF & AM, at Barry,
MO., and the Barry Eastern Star, Chapter 369, serving as Worthy Patron in 1962 and 1967.
also, he was a member of the Liberty Commandery #6, Liberty Chapter-Royal Arch
Masons #50, serving as Hi Priest in 1972. He served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Liberty
Masonic Bodies from 1`970-1990. He acted as building chairman for the Barry Masonic Hall
building project in 1979.
Mr. Schwarz was a member of the Gashland Methodist Church, serving on the Property
Committee and as a Building Trustee.
As one of the Charter Stockholders of the former First Bank of Gladstone, Mr.
Schwarz served as a member of the Bank's Board of Directors for a number of years.
In 1932, he married Jessie Fae Herndon, near Smithville. She died in 1995.
Mr. Schwarz was also preceded in death by his first wife, Winnie Williams Schwarz;
and a daughter Nancy Schrieber.
Survivors include a son Kenton Schwarz, Gower; a daughter Norma Lou Schwarz,
Smithville; grandchildren, Carolyn Cross, Janice VanHorne, Ray Schwarz, JIm Schwarz, Kathy
Shea, and Melissa Miller and 22 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life was held Monday, January 28, at Mt Moriah Terrace Park
Chapel, 801 NW 108th St., Kansas City, MO with graveside Masonic services at Mt. Moriah
Terrace Park Cemetery immediately following the service on Monday.
Donations may be made to the Rising Sun Masonic building Board Association, or the
Gashland Methodist Church.
HAROLD FAY DIVELBISS
Harold Divelbiss, 74, died Wed, Jan. Z3, 2002 at a St. Joseph Hospital. He was
born in DeKalb County Oct. 27, 1927. He was a lifetime resident of Stewartsville and
surrounding area.
He was a Stewartsville High School graduate, served 4 years in the Air Force.
He attended Clarksdale United Methodist Church and was a member of the
Robinson-Beeching American Legion Post 508 and a member of Continental Lodge #37 A.F.
& A.M., Stewartsville.
On July 24, 1964, he married Helen Sprague. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors are two daughters; Sandra Groom, Richardson, TX and Sherry Paysinger,
Clarksdale; l brother, Herbert, Clarksdale; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, January 26, at Bram-Summerfield Funeral Home, Stewartsville,
with Rev. Lloyd Nelson officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, St.
Joseph. Military Rites were by Robinson-Beeching Post #508.
Willis D. Attebury
Willis Dowell Attebury, 73, Plattsburg, died January 23, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Attebury was a farmer in the Plattsburg area and had also worked for Everett
Quarries for 15 years.
Born in Plattsburg on February 14, 1928, he lived in Plattsburg all of his life.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plattsburg.
On December 18, 1947, he married the former Betty Miller, she survives of the home.
Mr. Attebury was preceded in death by his parents Earnest Attebury and Dolly
(Gardner) Attebury; a sister, Helen Gipson and a brother Bobby Attebury.
Additional survivors include two sons, Leonard of Collins, MO and
Ricky of Plattsburg; a daughter Valerie Jo Attebury of St. Joseph; and three
grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial was held Saturday, January 26, 2002 at the Green
Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church,
Plattsburg.
Arrangements were made through the Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg.
Dale W. Shaffer
Dale W. Shaffer, 84, Plattsburg, formerly of Cowgill, died Wednesday, Jan. 23,
2002, at a health-care center in Plattsburg.
Mr. Shaffer, who was a retired farmer, was born in Kingston on Aug. 1, 1917.
He was a member of the Cowgill Baptist Church.
On Aug. 9, 1939, he married Elizabeth Stephens in Richmond. She died in 1994.
Mr. Shaffer also was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Bertha; and a
sister, Fern Farmer.
Survivors include two sons, Bob, Kearney and Stan, Cowgill; a daughter, Judy
Gardner, Mirabile; three step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, January 26, 2002 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Polo with
burial in the Cowgill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church.
Willard R. Madson
Willard R. (Bill) Madson, Plattsburg, will be honored at a celebration of living
at the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 27, 2002 at 2pm. Friends and relatives
are invited to attend.
Pearl Anhorn
Pearl Anhorn, 62, of Gonzales, LA passed away in her home.
She was a former resident of Plattsburg.
A memorial will be held at the home on a later date.
Jack Rheuport Jr.
Jack Rheuport Jr., 37, Richmond, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home.
Born in Kansas City, KS, on Aug. 27, 1964, Mr. Rheuport was employed by the Haldex
Co. in Kansas City.
On May 29, 1993, he married Michelle Seefus. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Andrew and Jacob both of the home; a
daughter, Pamela Rheuport of the home; his father, Donald Duffey, Hardin; his mother, Lana
Duffey, Lathrop; a brother Peter Duffey, Grandview and Sherri Miller, Independence, who
was reared in the home.
Service was held Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop.
Peter Torre
Peter Torre, 69, Plattsburg died Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at a St. Joseph
hospital.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 5, 1932 to C. John Torre and Vincenza
(Catalletto) Torre.
On April 16, 1955, he married Carole Webster, she survives of the home.
Mr. Torre retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service as a Chief Master
Sergeant. He started his career as a plumber and progressed through the grade in that
field to plumbing supervisor. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, in
1967 and 1971. He also served as a recruiter for all USAF programs. He was stationed in
several different countries including Korea, Greenland and Libya.
Mr. Torre raised his family in Chillicothe where he was a master plumber. He later
moved to Plattsburg and continued his plumbing business for many years.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Plattsburg; a member of the V.F.W.
Post #4428, The American Legion Post #0025, and the U.S.A.F. (United States Air force)
Sergeants Association.
Preceding him in death were his parents, C. John Torre and Vincenza (Cataletto)
Torre.
Survivors include three sons, John Torre of Springfield, Mike Torre, of Plattsburg,
Stephen Torre of Kansas City; two daughters, Jennie Torre of Kansas City and Mary Torre of
Plattsburg, six grandchildren, Jason Torre, Brandi Torre, Nathan Torre, Tanner Torre
Rachel Torre and Dominic Torre, and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 21, 2002 at St. Ann's Catholic
Church. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the
Bantam Football League c/o Cox Funeral Home where arrangements were made.
Vilena Bywaters
Vilena (Sue) Bywaters, 71, of Smithville, passed away, Wednesday, January 16,
2002, at her home in Smithville.
She was born on September 22, 1930, to Collins and Edna (Boydston) Yates in Platte
County, where she grew up and later graduated from Smithville High School.
On April 4, 1952 she married Jack Bywaters. He survives of the home.
She was a member of the Baptist church and the Eastern Star in Smithville.
She worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co and later in the
business office at Spellman Memorial Hospital and Clinic all in Smithville.
Preceding her in death were her parents and twin brothers, Clyde and Carrol Yates.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Dolores Bywaters, Lenexa; three grandsons,
Rodney, Bradley and Jeffrey; Dallas Sellars, Smithville, who she loved as a son; a
brother, Marion Yates, Smithville; a sister, Sharon Williams, Edgerton; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville with burial in the Ridgely Cemetery.
Helen I. Thompson
Helen I. (Cone) Thompson, 93, of Plattsburg formerly of Fanning, KS, died Tuesday
evening, Jan. 15, 2002, at a nursing home in Plattsburg.
Helen was born on August 15, 1908 in Parkville to Ernest and Sallie (Yates) Cone.
She was a 1927 graduate of Edgerton High School. She lived on a farm in Fanning,
until retiring in 1964 and moved to St. Joseph and then moved to Plattsburg in1992.
She attended the Baptist Church in Plattsburg.
Helen was married to Kenneth Fisher; he died in 1932. She then married Gurden
Thompson on December 9, 1943 in Troy, KS; he died on June 9, 1992. She was also preceded
in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Marjorie Irene Fisher in 1931; two
brothers, Bernard and David Cone; a sister, Thelma Boydston.
Survivors include four sisters, Edith Eickhoff, Cameron, Edna Pendleton, Plattsburg,
Mary Rutter, Kansas City and Grace Birdwell, Phoenix; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Troy
with burial in the Iola Cemetery in Sparks, KS.
Kathryn A. Swanson
Kathryn Ann (Barnett) Swanson, 66, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002 at St. Mary's
Hospital in Reno, NV.
She was born in Plattsburg Aug. 24, 1935, to Lewis and Georgie Barnett and had been
a resident of Lassen County, CA since 1979.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Swanson of Janesville, CA; sons, Andrew Carter
of San Jose, CA and Casey Carter of Westwood, CA; a sister, Betty Pearson of St. Joseph;
three grandchildren; two nieces; two nephews; several aunts; many cousins and friends.
A memorial services was held at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno.
Thelma D. Craig
Thelma Demarris Kirkpatrick Craig, 57, Kansas City, passed away, Monday, January
14, 2002 at her home.
She was born on July 8, 1944, to Jesse Dawn and Ruby Jane (Phillips) Kirkpatrick
near Plattsburg. Thelma attended school and grew up near Plattsburg and later lived near
Paradise.
On March 3, 1972 she was united in marriage to Willard Craig. After their
marriage they lived in Nashua and Smithville and later moved to Kansas City.
Her husband, Willard, preceded her in death on January 20, 1982.
Thelma was a member of the North Heartland Community Church in Riverside.
She worked in customer service at the Sears Outlet Store on Front street in Kansas
City and also was a volunteer at the Psychic Fair where she just received the Volunteer of
the Year Award.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, William Kirkpatrick.
Survivors include three sons, William Kirkpatrick, Kansas City, Tracy Craig, Kearney
and Andy Craig, Gladstone; three daughters, Cindy Drew, Kansas City, Cathy Duncan and
Stacy Fales, both of Smithville; thirteen grandchildren; three brothers, James
Kirkpatrick, Plattsburg, Maurice Kirkpatrick, Lower Lake, CA, and Evan Kirkpatrick,
Festus; a sister, Sue Kral, Decatur, TX; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and
many friends.
Services were held Thursday, January 17th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville. Private burial will be held at a later date at Ft. Leavenworth National
Cemetery.
Patricia S. Parks
Patricia S. "Pat" Parks, 69, Kansas City, formerly of Gower, died
Monday, January 14, 2002, at the Liberty Hospital.
Pat was born October 31, 1932, in Poplar Bluff to Albert and Bernadine (Thompson)
Lee. She was a graduate of Gower High School. She married Dale Parks on April 10, 1955. He
survives of the home.
She was a member of Claycomo Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and an infant son, Mark.
Survivors include a daughter, Shauna Carrol and her husband, Dan, Raymore; a brother
John D. Lee, Knob Noster; two grandchildren Erin and Ryan Carroll both of Raymore and a
host of dear friends.
Funeral services are being held at 1pm today, Thursday, January 17,, 2002 at the
Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home, Liberty with burial in the Fairview Cemetery, in
Liberty.
Charles L. Kirtwright
Charles L. Kirtwright, 86, of Lathrop died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002 at the Clinton
Care and Rehab Center in Plattsburg.
He was born March 31, 1915 in Quincy, IL and had lived in the Kansas City area
before moving to Lathrop in 1985.
Charles worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and later was a custodian
at St. Luke's Hospital. He retired from both. He was a member of the Lathrop First Baptist
Church and a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence Kirkwright; a brother
and a sister.
Survivors include a son Stanley of Kansas City; a daughter, Bonita Cloud of Lathrop;
a step-son, Eddie Morrison of Kansas City; a step-daughter, Gail Allen of Kidder; 4
grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Service is being held Today, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at the Bailey Funeral Home,
Lathrop at 2pm with burial in the Lathrop Cemetery.
Leona F. Stephenson
Mrs. Leona Faye Stephenson, 81, of Excelsior Springs, died Monday, January 14,
2002 after a brief illness.
Leona was born February 14, 1920 in Gower. She had lived her entire life in the
Smithville and Excelsior springs areas.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Si Stephenson in 1976.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Bessie and Ray Wilson of Excelsior
Springs, Leona and Alan Kennedy of Plattsburg; 8 sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Jane
Stephenson of Frederickstown, William and Irene Stephenson, Charles Stephenson and Vernon
and Louise Stephenson all of Excelsior Springs, Oakley Stephenson of Warsaw, Donald and
Cathy Stephenson of Norman, OK, Bobbie Stephenson of Excelsior Springs, Russell and Angie
of Liberty, three sisters, Wanda Belk of Kansas City, Opal Berry of St. Joseph and Nancy
Streeter of Plattsburg; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 12
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at the Prichard Chapel with
burial in Paradise Cemetery near Smithville.
W. B. Stanton
W. B. "Dub" Stanton, 70, of rural Faucett passed away, Sunday, January
13, 2002 at his home.
He was born on July 2, 1931 to Charles and Anna (Tadlock) Stanton near Faucett where
he grew up and in 1949 graduated from Faucett High School. He then served his country in
the US Army during the Korean War.
On May 15, 1954, he was united in marriage to Arlene Dittemore. After their marriage
they farmed near Faucett where they made their home. She survives of the home.
Dub worked for the Missouri Department of Agriculture Grain Inspection and the
Burlington Northern Railroad. He enjoyed and played all sports, including pitching fast
pitch softball for the L.F.M. and Agency teams. He also enjoyed playing cards with family
and friends, but his greatest love was his cattle and farming. Dub was a member of the
Christian Faith. He served on the Mid-Buchanan School Board, Mid-Buchanan Betterment
Association, A.S.C.S. Board, Buchanan County Zoning Commission, and the Brinton Cemetery
Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gregory; two brothers, Dale and
James Stanton; and a sister, Arlene McClelland.
Additional survivors include two sons, Dick and wife, Wilma and Brad and wife Tina
all of Faucett; four grandchildren, Mitchel, Patrick, Christopher and Jacob; a brother,
Stanley, Agency; five sisters, Dorothy Corkins, Agency, Donna Klenk, St. Joseph, Doris
Johnson, St. Joseph, Anna Lou Grisham, Gower and Patty Spaeth, Lathrop; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Home, Gower with burial in the Mt. Pleasant Old Frame Cemetery, rural Dearborn.

George R. Smith
George Russell Smith, 75, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at a hospital
in Leavenworth.
For 40 years, Mr. Smith worked as a laborer in the heavy construction industry,
including the Feeney Construction Co. of St. Joseph for several years until retiring in
1989.
Born in Pattonsburg on May 5, 1926, he had been a resident of St. Joseph since 1942.
During World War II, Mr. Smith served in the Navy and received several medals. He
attended God's Place of St. Joseph.
On Jan. 4, 1954, he married Juanita F. White in St. Joseph. She survives of the
home.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by an infant son, Fred D.; his parents, Orville and
Ellie; and three sisters, Mildred Carter, Helen Foster and Eloise Shipers.
Additional survivors include three sons, Kenneth and George both of Gower and
Orville, St. Joseph; three daughters, Mary Jones, Dearborn, Brenda Witkowski and Sarah
Clinton, both of St. Joseph; a brother, Elmo, St. Joseph; 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday at the Gladden-Stamey Funeral Home, St. Joseph with
burial in the McFall Cemetery with military honors by members of the 139th Airlift Wing of
the Missouri Air National Guard.

N. Grace Reneberg
Mrs. N. Grace Musser Reneberg, 95 of Plattsburg, died Saturday Jan. 12,
2002 at a Liberty Hospital. She was born on Feb. 9, 1906 in Starfield. She worked for the
Edison Brothers Company of Kansas City, and Portland, Oregon.
On Dec. 1, 1928 she married Floyd Reneberg. He preceded her in death in June,
1984. Mrs. Reneberg lived in Kensington, KS until the death of her husband and then she
moved back to Plattsburg in 1984. While living in Plattsburg she was a member of the
Broadway United Methodist Church and the Clinton County Senior Citizens Center.
Her parents Harrison L. and Nettie Musser; 4 brothers, Charlie, Willie,
John, and Rollie Musser; 2 sisters Dottie Sullivan and Nellie Kunce preceded her in
death.
Survivors include a son Richard Reneberg of Houston, TX; 3 grandchildren and 2
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10am., Thursday Jan. 17, 2002 at the Cox Funeral Home,
Plattsburg. Burial will be in the German Town Cemetery, Kensington, KS. Family visitation
was held from 7-8:30pm Wednesday Jan. l6, 2002 at the Cox Funeral Home where Friends were
able to call anytime after 11am Wednesday at the Funeral Home. The family suggest memorial
gifts to the Broadway United Methodist Church or the Senior Citizens Center. Arrangements
were made by the Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg.
Helen L. Norton
Mrs. Helen L. Norton, 90, of Plattsburg, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the
Liberty Hospital.
She was born in Plattsburg on Oct. 14, 1911. Graduated from Plattsburg High
School and attended College in Warrensburg.
Mrs. Norton was a school teacher in rural Clinton County; a member of the First
Christian Church of Plattsburg and the Prairie Cottage Club and the Farm Bureau both of
Plattsburg. She also worked for the USDA Census Bureau and on the family farm.
On April 30, 1935 she married R. Rea Norton. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Charlotte Ditmars; and a
granddaughter, Shelley Norton.
Additional survivors include two sons, Wesley and David both of Plattsburg; a
daughter Charnette Norton of Missouri City, TX; 5 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the First Christian Church,
Plattsburg with burial in the Brethren Church Cemetery, Plattsburg.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the First Christian Church Youth Fellowship.
Arrangements were made by the Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg.
Jeanne' L. Reynolds
Jeanne' Lynn Reynolds, 24, Faucett, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at a hospital
in Kansas City, KS.
Ms. Reynolds was a certified nurse's assistant with the Clinton Care and Rehab in
Plattsburg until her illness. Before that, she was employed by Beverly Manor of St.
Joseph; Missouri Gower Convalescent in Gower; and LaVerna Heights of Savanna. She also
worked for the Mini Blessing Daycare.
Born in St. Joseph on Dec. 16, 1977, she had lived most of her life in Faucett. Mrs.
Reynolds was a graduate of Mid Buchanan High School in Faucett and a member of the Faucett
Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Todd Reynolds; maternal grandparents,
Laurence and Fleta Willmore; and paternal grandfather, Max Reynolds.
Survivors include a daughter Katelyne Boffman of the home; her parents, Karl and
Connie Reynolds of the home and paternal grandmother, Lolita Reynolds, Faucett.
Service was held Monday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St.
Joseph with burial in the Faucett Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mary C. Hake
Mary Carolyn Hake, 72, of Monroe City and formerly of Plattsburg, died Thursday,
Jan. 3, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Hake was born Sept. 22, 1929,in Monroe County to Joseph and Mary Leola Hagan
Montgomery.
She was married to Floyd Hack on Sept. 22, 1948, in Indian Creek. He preceded her in
death Oct. 3, 1955. She then married Eugene Castanier on Feb. 7, 1964 in Macon. He
preceded her in death Sept. 18, 1974. She was later married to Raymond Hake on May 6,
1978, in Mexico. He preceded her in death in February, 1981.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara Hack and a grandson,
Jason Wann.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Hack of Boonville, David Hack of Columbia and
James Hack of Kansas City; three daughters, Beverly Brownlee of Cameron, Marcia Devine of
Adrain and Laurie White of St. Louis; 25 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Rita Kendrick of Monroe City and Dorothy Dierker of Quincy, IL; two brothers,
Melvin Montgomery of Lexington and John Montgomery of Blue Springs; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Mass of Christina Burial was held Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Holy Rosary Catholic
Church in Monroe City with burial in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Shelbina.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Monroe City Nutrition
Center.
Hallie M. Hall
Hallie M. (McDowell) Hall, 108, St. Joseph, formerly of Gower, died
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at a Gower health-care center.
Born in St. Joseph in the Sugar Town area on Oct. 1, 1893, Mrs. Hall moved to Gower
at an early age.
On July 31, 1912, she married Luther Hall in Plattsburg. They farmed in the Gower
area for a few years and then moved to St. Joseph. He died in 1969.
Mrs. Hall was a member of the Copeland Baptist Church, St. Joseph, where she was
president of the Women's Missionary Circle, secretary of the Fidelis Sunday School Class
and on the kitchen committee. She also was a member of the South Park Rebekah Lodge in St.
Joseph.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Earl; two daughters, Mildred Hall and Ruby
Cline; her parents, Earnest and Suzie McDowell; and a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcella Hall, St. Joseph; a son Millard, Salt
Lake Ccity, UT; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden
Chapel, St. Joseph with burial in the Allen Cemetery, Gower. Memorials maybe made to her
church or South Park Rebekah Lodge.

Mary E. McFarland
Richard Ernest McFarland, 70, Atchison, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at a St.
Joseph hospital. His wife Mary Ellen (Murphy) McFarland, 66, Atchison died Thursday, Jan.
3, 2002 at the Atchison hospital.
Mr. McFarland, born in Atchison on Feb. 1, 1931, was employed as a rural letter
carried for the U.S. Postal Service in Atchison until 1987. Then he moved to Rockville,
MO, where he served as postmaster until retiring in 1989. After retiring he returned to
Atchison and worked part-time for Project Concern, the Rainbow Car Wash and as
groundskeeper for the Atchison Senior Village. He also was a volunteer driver for cancer
patients.
He was a graduate of the Atchison high school and a veteran of the Navy.
Mrs. McFarland, born in Atchison on July 17, 1935, was a teacher at the Maur Hill
Prep School in Atchison for 17 years. Then she worked part-time for Maur Hill and Mount
St. Scholastica Academy in Atchison.
She was a graduate of Mount St. Scholastica Academy and earned a teaching
certificate.
The couple were members of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Atchison. He also was a
member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post No. 6 and Veterans of foreign
Wars Post No. 1175, both of Atchison.
On Nov. 5, 1955, he married Mary E. Murphy in Atchison.
Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Irene; and two
brothers.
Mrs. McFarland was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Elizabeth Murphy;
and a brother.
Survivors include a son, Bruce, Plattsburg; four daughters, Lois McFarland, Karen
Shufflebarger and Paula Higley all of Topeka and Colette Haugness, Atchison; his sister,
Marilyn Keimig, Atchison; her brother, Leroy Murphy, Chicago; her two sisters, Tresa
Buessing, Atchison and Betty Bunck, Everest, KS; and 11 grandchildren.
Joint Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at St. Benedict's
Catholic Church, Atchison with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Atchison.

Doris Karr, 91, formerly of Lathrop, passed away at Edinburg Nursing Home in
Texas on February 2, 2002.
Memorial service will be held at 1pm, Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the Bailey Funeral
Home in Lathrop. The Rev. Joe Scahill will be officiating.
She is survived by one daughter: Karen Knutter of Alamo, Texas, two grandchildren:
Mark Knutter of Kansas City, MO, and Michael Knutter of Holt, MO. Four
great-grandchildren: Stephen, Everett, Ashley and Aaron Knutter.
She was a lifelong resident of Caldwell and Clinton Counties and a member of the
Prairie Ridge Christian Union Church near Polo. She resided in the Lathrop Senior
Citizen's Complex after the death of her spouse, Alvin H. Karr in 1978. She moved back to
Texas in 1995 to be near her daughter. After four years in Texas she moved back to
Missouri to Bristal Manor Assisted Living in Weston. She became very ill in November of
2001 and went back to Texas with her family.
Herbie Hamilton
Herbie Hamilton, 92, Gower, passed away, Thursday, February 28, 2002 in St.
Joseph.
He was born on July 16, 1909 to James and Mary Ella (Call) Hamilton in Sharpsburg,
KY where he grew up and attended school. In 1935 he moved to Gower where he made his home.
Herbie worked for the Gibson's and Schuster's Farms in Gower for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marvin Hamilton and two sisters,
Mary Hamilton and Pauline Prince.
Herbie is survived by friends in the Gower Community.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Gower with burial in Allen Cemetery.
Ralph B. Mosby
Ralph B. Mosby, 91 of Boothwyn, PA, passed away, Wednesday, February 27, 2002.
He was born on December 20, 1910 to Benjamin and Rosie Mosby in Camden, where he
attended school and grew up.
On April 27, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ermine Everett. After their marriage
they lived in the greater Kansas City area, where he worked for TWA. They later
moved to Independence and in 1999 they moved to Media, PA, where they made their home. His
wife Ermine, passed away on Nov. 3, 2001.
He was a longtime member of the Sterling Acres Baptist Church in Raytown and the
International Association of Machinists Local 1650 in Kansas City.
Ralph was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Geraldine Runge, Ruth
Weidman, Lillian Fansler, and Flora Cleary, and an infant brother, Byron.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Leland and Linda Mosby, Boothwyn, PA;
four grandchildren, Danielle Mosby, Tony Persichetti, Leland Mosby, Jr., and wife Joni and
Crystal Mosby; a brother, Durwood Mosby, Topeka, KS and a brother-in-law, L.W.
"Woody" Everett, Cedar Grove, NJ; several nieces and nephews, other relatives
and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Saturday, March 9th at the Hixson-Klein
Funeral Home, Gower with burial in Mt Zion Cemetery, Gower.
The family will receive friends form 6:30-8:30pm Friday evening at the funeral home

Emily R. Pollard
Emily Ruth Pollard, 76, Lathrop, died Sunday, February 24, 2002 at the Liberty
Hospital, Liberty.
Ruth was born November 1, 1925 near Hale and had lived in Turney
most of her life before moving to Lathrop a few years ago. She was a very active member of
the First Baptist Church in Lathrop and was a homemaker.
On October 12, 1946, Ruth was united in marriage to Herbert Pollard in Clinton and
he preceded her in death in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and
Jenny Pinkard; a son, Mark 1997 and a sister, Christine Werden.
Survivors include a son, Michael Pollard, Lathrop; two daughters, Kathy Mydland,
Lathrop and Terry Quigley, Cameron; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother,
J.W. Pinkard, Denver, CO and three sisters, Kathryn Potter, Chillicothe, Dorothy Reynolds,
Denver, CO and Marjorie Grossman, Chillicothe.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at the First Baptist Church,
Lathrop with Interment in the Cameron Memory Gardens. The family requests a memorial to

Arlene Harmer
Arlene Harmer, 93, of Edgerton, passed away, Friday, February 22, 2002 at Beverly
Health Care in Smithville.
She was born on March 11, 1908 to James and Mattie (Liggett) Harmer in Platte County
near Edgerton. Arlene attended school and grew up near Edgerton and later graduated from
Edgerton High School.
Arlene farmed and raised livestock in the Edgerton area and in later years took care
of her mother and father. In 1984 she retired and moved to Edgerton.
She was a longtime member of the Mt. Zion Baptist church in Edgerton.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Herbert and James Harmer;
a sister, Zelma Harmer, and two sisters-in-law, Mary Ella and May Harmer.
Survivors include a brother, Alfred Harmer, Kansas City; sister-in-law, Rosalie
Harmer, Kansas City; niece, Janice McLean, San Francisco; two great-nephews, Jason and
Jeff Mann, other relatives and many friends.

Edgerton with burial in the Ridgely Cemetery.
Earl P. Rose
Earl Paul Rose, 60, of Holt, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at his home
in Holt.
Earl was born January 6, 1942 in Milwaukee, WI and had lived in the Holt area for
the last 4 1/2 years. He was a member of the Teamster's Local 200 in Milwaukee and was a
retired truck driver.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Ethel Zimmerman Rose.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of the home; two sons, Kevin Rose of Kansas City,
Wayne Rose of Holt; 4 grandchildren; two step-brothers, John Marn of Portland, OR and
David Rose of Milwaukee; two step-sisters, Nancy Anderson of Eaglecreek, OR and Lynn Rose
of Milwaukee.

Ted Welsh
Ted Welsh, 65, of Plattsburg, passed away, Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at the
Liberty Hospital.
He was born on June 11, 1936 to Charlie and Allena (Pierson) Welsh near Trimble. He
attended school at Priairie Point and in 1948 the family moved to
Plattsburg where he graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1955.
On February 18, 1956 he was united in marriage to Virginia Brown. After their
marriage they lived in the Plattsburg area where they made their home.
Ted worked for various farmers in the Plattsburg area, local grocery stores, Mead
Container in 1969 in the plant, and in 1971 he became an OTR driver for Mead, which later
became Weyerhaeuser in St. Joseph, until the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plattsburg, where he was baptized in
1948 and also the Plattsburg Country Club.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, of the home; three sons, Harold Welsh,
Plattsburg, Teddy Welsh, Kansas City, and Douglas Welsh, Sacramento, CA; five
grandchildren, Michael, Anthony, Tedi, Dawn, and Samantha; one great-grandson, Preston; a
brother, Charles Welsh, Belton; a sister, Charlene Gipson, Plattsburg; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 25, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in
Plattsburg with burial in the Green Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Klein
Funeral Home.
Lee Roy Cassity
Lee Roy Cassity, 67, of Kansas City, died February 18, 2002 at New Mark Nursing
Care Center in Kansas City.
Lee was born in Kansas City on April 25, 1934, living his childhood on a farm in
Blue Springs. He graduated from Blue Springs High School in1952 and was in the Army form
1956 to 1958. He married Dorothy "Dottie" Spencer on September 25, 1954 and they
lived most of their life in Platte Woods. She survivors of the home. His entire career was
spent with KCP&L, and he retired from the Real Estate Department with 40 years of
service in 1992. He was a member of the John Lynn Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank T. and Jewell Cassity.
Additional survivors include two sons, Douglas and wife Cindy of Edgerton and Steve
and wife Kerri, Kansas City; a daughter Penny Trimble and husband Scott of Olathe, KS;
eleven grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Mae Straw, Blue Springs.
The family will receive friends from 11am to 1pm with funeral services immediately
following on Friday, February 22 in Tiffany Fellowship, 7315 NW Barry Road, Kansas City. A
private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the

Jean Nickerson
Jean Laura Nickerson, 83, Stewartsville, died Feb. 16, 2002, at a healthcare
facility in Gladstone.
Jean was born June 8, 1918 in Waterville, MN to Walter and Annie
"Chambers" Matson.
On April 16, 1947 she married Charles Nickerson in Kansas City. He preceded
her in death in 1990.
Jean worked as a truck driver for Matson Truck Lines before purchasing the Nickerson
Cafe in Pattonsburg.
She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, Billy L. and Zoe Smith in
1977; three brothers, Roy, Erwin, and Donald Matson; two sisters, Myrtise Sutter and Eva
Shobie.
Survivors include two grandsons that she raised after the death of their parents,
David Smith, Stewartsville and Kent Smith, Kansas City, KS. A brother, Glen Matson,
Fort Myers, FL and two sisters Ethel Lair, Lido, CA; Gladys Smith, Faribault, MN.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 in Gallatin. Burial in Crown Hill
Cemetery, Denver, CO. The family suggest memorials be made to the Missouri State
Troopers Association.
Donald Skaggs
Donald Edward "Duck" Skaggs, 78, lifelong resident of Dearborn, passed
away on Friday, Feb. 15, 2002.
Donald was born on September 26, 1923 to Jenk William and Alma Ruth (Wells) Skaggs.
On April 3, 1943 he married Lola F. Bowles in Troy, KS. Donald was a farmer
and also worked for the J.B. Halferty Elevator in Dearborn. In addition, he was a
school bus driver for the Faucett School District.
He was a member to the Dearborn Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lola, of the home; one son, James of Faucett; three
daughters, Teresa Carr of Gower, Donna Gabbert and Jana Tersterman both of Dearborn; one
brother, Jenkin Wells Skaggs of Dearborn; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren;
one step grandson and five step great grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at Vaughn-Aufranc Funeral Home in
Dearborn.
Thomas A. Gray
Thomas Alva Gray, 86, Plattsburg, died February 14, 2002 at a Kansas City
hospital.
Tom was born April 18, 1915 to Helbert Alva and Mary Etta Banks Gray in Eagleville,
MO.
On May 4, 1934 he married Claudia Ladine Brown in Bethany, MO.
Tom served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Tom and his wife, Claudia
owned and operated Gray Furniture stores. After leaving the retail furniture
business, they operated a booth in a flea market. Tom was a born-again Christian and
a member of the First Baptist Church in Plattsburg. He enjoyed family, golf,
boating, water skiing, hunting and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Janice Ladine (Sally) Gray.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia, Plattsburg; two sons, Tom Jr. of Leawood, KS
and Nick of Shell Knob, MO; five grandsons, Paul Gray of Spicewood, TX, Daniel Gray of
Manassas, VA, Douglas Gray of Bonita Springs, FL, Derek Locke of Smyrna, GA and Stephen
Gray of Kansas City; one granddaughter, Lisa Gray Smith of New Orleans, LA; and three
great granddaughters, Josephine Gray of Manassas, VA , Zoe and Hope Locke, of Smyrna, GA.
Services were held on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 at the First Baptist Church, Plattsburg.

Emily Hickman, 81, Shelbina, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 in Columbia, MO.
She was born in Leonard, MO on July 24, 1920 to Arden and Fenton Bradley Worland.
On April 16, 1941 she married Lloyd "Buss" Hickman Sr.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, John Hickman of St. Joseph and Joe Hickman
of Shelbina; five grandchildren, John A. Hickman and July Bartlett of Kansas City, J.L.
Hickman of Plattsburg, Lewis Hickman of Aurora, CO and Mike Hickman of Shelbina; two
step-grandchildren, Tom Maubach of Shelbina and Laura Bray of Sweet Springs; two
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Fannie Shores of Newton, IA, Ardith Welch of Mexico,
MO and Mary Early, Los Angeles, CA.

Sue Brown
Sue Brown, 63, Edgerton, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at her home.
Sue was born on March 19, 1938 to James Forest and Aletha Foster Witt near Agency.
She attended school and grew up in the Gower and Edgerton areas. She
graduated from North Platte High School in Dearborn.
On June 16, 1956 she married Jack L. Brown at the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
They made their home in Edgerton.
She worked for the U.S. Postal for 28 years.
She is survived by her husband, Jack of the home; two sons, Martin and his wife,
Carol of Lathrop and Paul and his wife, Tracy also of Lathrop; one daughter, Janet Vogel
and her husband, Russell of Lawson; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Evelyn
Livingston of Gower and Marolyn Jean Butler of Brandon, FL; several nieces, nephews,
relatives and friends.

Jane Alice Swindler
Jane Alice (Munkirs) Swindler, 54, of Lathrop MO died Tuesday, February 12, 2002
at a hospital in Liberty, MO.
Funeral services were Saturday. February 16, 2002 at Lathrop First Baptist Church.

Jane was born November 27. 1947 in Excelsior Springs, MO and lived in the Lathrop
area since 1965. She was the secretary and bookkeeper for Sam's Body Glass and Auto Repair
for 28 years. The business is owned by her husband, Sam. Jane graduated from Excelsior
Springs High School, was a member of Lathrop
First Baptist Church, Lathrop Antique Car Club, and the Horseless Carriage Club in Kansas
City.
Jane was married on August 1, 1965 to Sam Swindler in Excelsior Springs, MO and he
survives of the home.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Donald and Edrie Munkirs, one sister:
Bonnie Grimes, one son: Tony Swindler of Gaithersburg, MD, one daughter: Melissa
Fitzmaurice of Lathrop, one grandson; Andrew and one expectant grandchild to be born in
September.

Ralph Landis
Ralph Landis, 101, Edgerton, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at St. Luke's
Northland Hospital.
Ralph was born December 17, 1900 in Wagoner, OK, the son of Sapharino and Trinidad
Flores Rodrigues.
He served with the 2nd Infantry Division in WWI and was thought to be the last WWI
veteran in the Kansas City Metro area. He was a member of the Edgerton American Legion and
Teamsters Local 956.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Landis and a son, Richard Landis, both
in 1984.
Survivors include a son Ralph S. Landis, Platte City; a daughter, JoAnn Davis,
Independence; step-daughters Billie Routh, Easton, Irene Wimberley, Easton; 7
grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at Mt. Zion Baptist
Church, Edgerton. Interment will be in Barry Cemetery, Kansas City. Memorial contributions
may be given to the American Legion, Edgerton.

Kathrine J. Grayson
Kathrine J. Grayson, 87, of Plattsburg died Friday, February 8, 2002, at her
residence.
Kathrine was born at Mecca in February 28, 1914. She attended the Washington School
in Plattsburg and was a life long resident of Plattsburg.
Preceding her in death were her parents Mac and Susie (Tate) Grayson; 5 brothers,
Elton, Ralph, Oliver, Charles and Clarence; and a sister, Velma Morris.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Ms. Grayson has been cremated with inurnment at a later date. Arrangements by the
Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg.

Donald Eugene Gatewood, 59, of Plattsburg passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2002.
His cancer may have won the battle but it never took away his kind and thoughtful

He was a member of the Restoration Church of Christ.
Survivors include his parents, Farrel and Maxine Gatewood; a sister, Cheryl
Dicavolo; and two brothers, John Gatewood and Robert Gatewood.
A closed service was held in his honor with burial in the Goss Cemetery, Smithville.

Kenneth R. "KR" Mick, Master Chief Boatswains Mate United States Navy,
Retired died February 7, 2002 in North Charleston, SC.
KR was born on November 14, 1942 in Plattsburg to O.L. and Lorine Mick.

Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel in Beaufort, SC. Burial in Beaufort National

Helen L. McDaniel
Helen Louise (Smith) McDaniel, 71, of Kansas City, passed away Thursday, February
7, 2002 at North Kansas City Hospital .
She was born on September 11, 1930 to Harold Rotchford and Alma Lee (Poage) Smith
near Edgerton. She attended school and grew up near Gower and graduated from Gower High
School in 1947.
On March 25, 1950, she was united in marriage to Don McDaniel. After their marriage
they lived in St. Joseph, Waterloo, IA and in 1966 they moved to Kansas City where they
made their home. He survives of the home.
Helen worked at ITT Grinnell in Kansas City for any years, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of the Gashland Presbyterian Church in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gene "Twister"
Smith.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Sharon Askey and husband, Don; a son,
Steve McDaniel and wife, Christine all of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Jenifer and
Stefani Askey, and Erin and Kyle McDaniel; two sisters, Mary Jo Bent and Sarah Norris,
both of Kansas City and a brother Harold Lee Smith, Gower; several nieces and nephews,
other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 11, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral
Home, Gower with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.
Frederick E. Bodenhausen
Frederick E. Bodenhausen, 90, Plattsburg, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at a
Plattsburg health care center.
Mr. Bodenhausen retired from Moorman Manufacture Co. as a District
Manager and was a farmer in the Plattsburg area.
Born in Cosby on February 9, 1911, he lived their until he moved to Plattsburg in
1936.
Mr. Bodenhausen was a member of the First Christian Church in Plattsburg where he
was an Elder and a Deacon. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #113 of Plattsburg where he
was a Past Patron and a 50-year member and Mitchell Chapter 14 RAM (Royal Arch Mason) of
St. Joseph where he was also a 50-year member, The Order of Eastern Star, where he served
as Past Patron, served in many offices, and was a 50-year member, and Moila Shrine Temple
in St. Joseph, where he was a 50-year member.
On September 27, 1933, he married Thelma White, she preceded him in death in July
1996.
Mr. Bodenhausen was also preceded in death by his parents William Frederick and Dora
(Klinghoffer) Bodenhausen; a son, Robert; four brothers, Erich, Ira, Orvalle, and Harry;
three sisters, Frieda Schneider, Pearl Theis and Clara Bodenhausen.
Survivors include two sons, Frederick (Bill) Bodenhausen of Plattsburg and Gary
Bodenhausen M.D. of Blue Springs; a daughter, Janice Simpson of Hamilton; nine
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, February 11, 2002, at the First Christian Church,
Plattsburg with interment in the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cosby. The family
suggests memorial gifts to the First Christian Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Joan Baber
Joan Baber, 80, Camden Point, passed away, Tuesday, February 5, 2002 in Kansas
City.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1921, to Edward Samuel and Eileen (Groom) Jackson in
Platte County, near Edgerton.
Joan attended school and grew up near Camden Point and later graduated from the
Camden Point High School.
On July 22, 1939 she was united in marriage to Clifford Baber. After their marriage
they lived near Camden Point and in 1945 they moved to Camden Point where they owned and
operated Baber Oil Co. for many years. Her husband, Clifford, passed away on February 27,
1982.
Joan was a longtime member of the Camden Point Christian Church.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include a son, Larry Baber, and a daughter, Beverly Hershley, both
of Camden Point; five grandchildren, Mark, Mike, Elaina, Wade and Eddie; six
great-grandchildren, Holly, Cliff, Brandon, Aric, Joseph and Jackson; a brother, Bill
Jackson, Edgerton and a niece, Brenda Harmer, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the Camden Point Christian

Hilah J. Kirkpatrick
Hilah "Holly June" (Gardner) Kirkpatrick, 71, Turlock, CA
(formerly of Plattsburg, MO), passed away February 4, 2002.
June was born March 14, 1930 in Plattsburg, MO where she was raised. She
graduated from Plattsburg High School, where she played the clarinet in the marching band.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed collecting antiques and playing bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Cecil and Hattie Mae
"Kent" Gardner; and her sister, Bonnie Lou Shafer.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Robin Kirkpatrick; a
granddaughter, Andrea Kate Saso; a step grandson, Jeff Mitchell Turlock and several nieces
and nephews.
The body was cremated and private memorial services will be in St. Joseph, MO at a
later date.
Delbert Jones
Delbert Jones, 85, Plattsburg, formerly of Cameron and Lathrop, passed away
Monday, February 4, 2002 at a health care facility in Plattsburg. Born on July 5, 1916 in
Converse he was a Maintenance Crew Leader for Missouri State Highway Department for 22
years, retiring in 1978. He graduated from Lathrop High School. He was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Cameron, and a former member of the Cameron Ambulance Board
He married Berniece Fletcher on June 20, 1938 in Plattsburg. She survives of the
home. He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Bessie Jones; two sisters, Thelma
Gamble and Francis Jones; a granddaughter, Leslie Rogers.
Additional survivors include, a son, David Jones of Lathrop; a daughter, Nancy
Rogers of Trimble; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one
great-great-grandchild. Services were held Thursday, February 7, 2002 at Poland
Thompson Chapel, Cameron with burial in Cameron Memorial Gardens, Cameron.
Josephine Sloan
Josephine Sloan, 95, Cameron, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2002, at a
health-care center in Cameron.
Born on September 26, 1906, in Elmira, Mrs. Sloan was a homemaker. She graduated
from Hamilton High School and attended the Business college in Chillicothe.
She married Rolla Sloan. He preceded her in 1976.
She was preceded by her parents, Issac and Lilly Mae Grove.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Sloan of Cameron, Burton Sloan of Kearney; a
daughter, Avanell Dedman of Plattsburg; a sister, Bertha Edwards of Prescott, AZ; six
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, February 7, 2002, at Poland-Thompson Chapel, Cameron
with burial in Graceland Cemetery, Cameron.
Gladys H. Dedman
Mrs. Gladys Hall (Handley) Dedman, 102, Plattsburg, died Friday, February 1, 2002
at a Plattsburg healthcare center.
Mrs. Dedman, a homemaker, was born February 7, 1899, in Edgerton where she lived
until her marriage to Scearce Dedman on January 19, 1921. After their marriage they lived
on a farm west of Plattsburg. He preceded her in death in May 1966.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Jennie (Newman) Handley;
her daughter, Ann Ferguson; and a sister, Carrie Winn.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Plattsburg, Atchison Homemakers
Club, and the Clinton County Historical Society.
Survivors include her son, Robert "Bob" Dedman, and her daughter, Louise
Milliken, both of Plattsburg, six grandchildren and six great-grandsons.
Services were held Monday at the Cox funeral Home with Interment in the Green Lawn

JOHN HENRY HAMANN
John H. Hamann was born April 30, 1937, in Stewartsville, and passed away
February 1, 2002. He lived in Stewartsville and attended school here. He attended
Mechanical Trade School in Kansas City and spent 28 years with Ross Fraziers in St.
Joseph. He served in the Army for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. He lived
in Cameron, MO, since 1964. He married Sharon Divelbiss Aug. 30, 1960. She
survives at the home. John was a member of Community of Christ Church of Cameron and
a member of American Legion Post 33 of Cameron. He was preceded in death by his
father, Clarence. Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of the home; two sons, Kevin,
Medina, Ohio; and Brice, Osborn; his mother, Alta Hamann Kemp, St. Joseph; a brother,
Warren Independence; two sister, Joyce Griffin, St. Joseph; and Sharon Hamann, Kansas
City; three granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service were held Monday, Feb. 4, at Evergreen Cemetery, Osborn.

Mary Jo McMahon
Mrs. Mary Jo McMahon, 92, of Plattsburg died Thursday, March 28, 2002 at a St.
Joseph hospital. She was born on Oct. 30, 1909 in Plattsburg.
Mrs. McMahon was the Clinton County Assessor from 1942 until she retired in1965. She
was the past president of the Business Womens Assoc., The Womens Democratic Club and was a
member of the Clinton County Historical Society, and the First Christian Church all of
Plattsburg.
She was a graduate of Plattsburg High School.
She married Michael McMahon in 1949, in Pl
Mrs. McMahon was preceded in death by her parents John Porter and Maude
(Beard) Baer; and a brother, Sterling Porter.
Survivors include a daughter Joanne Holman; two sons, Carl and Sterling Jackson all
of Plattsburg.; 5 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren
and 8 step great-grandchildren.

Harrol A. Hanks
Harrol A. Hanks, 94, of Platte City passed away, Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the
Gower Convalescent Center.
He was born on March 27, 1907 to Thomas and Sarah (Lowman) Hanks in Liberty. Harrol
attended school and grew up near Smithville and later graduated from Smithville High
School.
On June 18, 1927, he was united in marriage to Hersie Randle. After their marriage
they lived in the southern states where he worked for Oman Construction Company. In 1944
they moved to the Gashland area, and later purchased a farm near Platte City where they
made their home. Harrol and his brother, Robert, owned and operated Hanks Brothers
bulldozing and he worked for farmers in the Clay and Platte County areas. His wife,
Hersie, passed away in March, 2000.
Harrol was a member of the Christian Church in Barry and the Masonic rising Sun
Lodge #13 and was Worshipful Master in 1957.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, J.C., Clifford,
Glen and Robert Hanks.
Harrol is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Walker and husband, Earl, Platte City;
a grandson, Alan Walker and wife, Carol, Pueblo, CO; a great-granddaughter, Jesee Bond and
husband, Luke, Kiowa, CO; a great-grandson, Justin Walker, Boulder, CO; a brother, D. Ward
Hanks, and a sister, Virginia Summers both of Smithville, several nieces and nephews,
other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services and burial were held Saturday, March 30th at the Platte City
Cemetery, with Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made

Emogene Long
Emogene Long, 84, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Monday, March 25, 2002, at
North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City.
She was born on April 30, 1917 to Fred and Mary McComas in Clay County.
Emogene attended school and grew up in the Edgerton and Smithville areas and
graduated from Smithville High School, and later attended Central Missouri State
University in Warrensburg.
On May 18, 1946 she was united in marriage to J.C. Long. After their marriage
they lived in Kansas City where they made their home. Her husband, J.C., passed away
in 1981.
Emogene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Kansas City for
over 50 years.
She taught school for several years in the Smithville and Nashua area, and later
worked for Western Auto in Kansas City for over 25 years.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at the First United
Methodist Church in Kansas City, 2100 Howell St. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in
Smithville, MO. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the
church.

Eula F. Massing
Eula Fern Massing, 70, St. Joseph, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at a St. Joseph
hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Massing was born on Oct. 13, 1931 in Grand City, MO. While residing in
St. Joseph most of her life, she graduated from Central High School in 1950 and attended
St. Joseph's Cathedral. She was a homemaker.
She married Charles Massing. The later divorced.
Mrs. Massing was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Minnie Barker; a
brother, Calvin Barker; and a sister, Catherine Smith.
She is survived by two sons, Joe Massing, St. Joseph, and James Massing, Gower; a
brother , Franklin Barker; two sisters, Mary Browning and Jean Stumps; and four
grandchildren.,

Marguerite S. Swanson
Marguerite S. Swanson, 91, St. Joseph, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at a Gower
health care center following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Swanson had been employed as the credit manager at the M.K. Goetz Brewing
Company and then later at the Pearl Brewery from 1952 until 1976.
Born January 14, 1911 in Ford City, MO, she resided in St. Joseph most of her life.
On June 21, 1936 she married Melvin W. Swanson. He preceded
her in death on June 5, 1951. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and
Osha Rainey Starks and two brothers, Aubrey Starks and Conda Starks.
Mrs. Swanson was a member of First Baptist Church where she served as the chair of
the homebound department for many years; Y-Women; Areme Chapter #461, Order of Eastern
Star and the XYZ Club. She was a graduate of the Central High School Class of 1929 and was
an accomplished pianist.
Survivors include three daughters, Karin M. Dunbar of
Kansas City, Gay L. Anderson of St. Joseph, and Kristin S. Gambill of Overland Park,
KS; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral
Service, St. Joseph with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cecil R. Stagner
Cecil Ray Stagner, 69, of rural Stewartsville passed away, Friday, March 22, 2002
at his home.
He was born on November 25, 1932, to William George Dewey and Flossie Ann
(Richardson) Stagner in Clinton County. He attended rural schools in the Stewartsville
area and in 1950 graduated from Gower High School.
He then served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and then the Army
Reserves for six years.
On December 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marie Molder. After their
marriage they lived in rural DeKalb and Clinton Counties and later settled in the
Stewartsville area.
Cecil farmed in the Clinton County area and worked for Yellow Freight in
Kansas City for twenty years, retiring in 1992.
He was a longtime member of the Browning Baptist Church, Turney and the American
Legion Post #393 in Gower.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William Stagner; two sisters, Ruby
Dubach and Dorothy Bleazard and a brother, Joseph Stagner.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, of the home; a son, Ray Lee Stagner,
Independence, honorary son, Darrell Morgan; five daughters, Sharon Pickens, Buffalo, MO,
Rita Sheppard, Stewartsville, Joy Tuey, Gower and Dorothy Nguyen, Buras, LA and Alice
Radford, Union Star; 22 grandchildren; a great-grandson, three sisters, Eva Zilinski,
Visalia, CA, Beverly Wall, Hastings, NE and Mary Hilton, Savannah; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Scott L. Johnston
Scott L. "Hammer" Johnston, 42, of St. Joseph passed away on Wednesday,
March 20, 2002 at a local hospital.
Mr. Johnston was born on Oct. 18, 1959, in St. Joseph, where he has been a lifelong
resident.
Scott was assistant manager for People's furniture in St. Joseph and was a member of
the Harley Hogs.
Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Sr. and Cecelia (Punzo)
Johnston; and a sister, Laura Ann Johnston.
Scott married the former Kathy Harr on Sept. 15, 1987. She survives of the home.

Balesteri of Kansas City; three brothers, Roger Jr., Mike and Steve Johnston all of St.

of Oregon; three grandchildren. Service was held Saturday, March 23, 2002, at

Eula Fern Massing, 70, St. Joseph, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at a St. Joseph
hospital following a lengthy illness.

Dorothy M. Everett
Dorothy Mary Everett, 84, St. Joseph devoted mother and grandmother passed away
Sunday, March 17, 2002 at LaVerna Heights Health Care Center, Savannah.
Mrs. Everett was born Feb. 21, 1918, in St. Joseph and was a lifelong St. Joseph
resident.
She was a 1936 graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart and attended Gard Business
College.
She was an assistant for Dr. William Lentz at Mercy Hospital in St. Joseph.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society,
Daughters Of Isabella and Legion of Mary. She practiced her faith by volunteering at the
Clothes Closet and House of Bread.
She was married to Victor R. Everett for 41 years before he passed away
Nov. 22, 1983.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Eden.
She is survived by a son, Victor Everett, Mabank, TX; daughters, Janet Kropp, St.
Joseph and Marilyn Keck, Lathrop; a sister, Maxine Pickett, St. Joseph; seven
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 19, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Helen L. Coker
Helen Lee Coker, 81, Lathrop died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Cameron
Hospital.
Helen was born May 3, 1920 in Slater and had lived most of her life in the Converse
and Lathrop areas. She was a member of the Lathrop First Christian Church. Helen had
worked at Aircraft Plants during WWII in California and Kansas City. She had also worked
at the Bendix Corporation for 24 years and had retired in 1990 as a nurses aid at the
Cameron Hospital.
On February 13, 1937, Helen married Joe Coker in Slater and he preceded her in
death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Horner and a
daughter, Penne Bradshaw.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Roberta Coker of
Independence; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and David Brown of Lathrop; a son-in-law,
Ron Bradshaw of Lathrop; six grandchildren, Robert Coker, Teri Coleman, Jon Bradshaw,
Rhonda Parra, Beth Scoggins, and Christine Robbins; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Frances Browne of Colorado and Josephine Williams of California.
Delores J. Clevenger
Delores Jean Clevenger, 42,, of Clinton passed away March 12, 2002 at St. Lukes
Hospital, Kansas City.
She was born January 18, 1960 in Kansas City. She married Michael Clevenger. He
survives of the home.
She lived in Clinton most of her life where she was a cook for the Elks Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Jerome and Judy Redmon Fitzmaurice and a
sister Joann Dunham.

Clevenger both of Clinton; two daughters, Susan Lindquist, Smithville and Michelle Lee

R. A. Bonwell
Roy Alfred Bonwell, 72, of Weatherby died Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at his home of
lung cancer.
He was born April 8, 1929 in Brandon, CO to Roy and Cora Eula (Swearingen) Bonwell.
Roy lived most of his life in Plattsburg, Maysville and Weatherby areas.
He married Alma Jean (Quinn) on July 27, 1953 in Troy, KS. She survives of the home.
Roy served in the Army during the Korean War. He hauled oil for Ashland Oil Co.,
farmed and ran a dairy operation. He retired to Weatherby in 1993.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Eugene and son Richard.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Deborah Kaye Koch, Lawson, Vickie Jean
Carnahan, Kearney; a brother, Donald, St. Joseph; a sister, Doris Siebermorgan, Atchison,
KS; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; several special nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Roe Kent passed away on February 27, 2002 in Alvin TX. Evelyn was born
November 20, 1922 in Perrin to Victor and Pearl Roe.
She married John Reynolds Kent on January 29, 1945 and they had three sons. John and
Evelyn resided in Plattsburg, later moving to Denver, CO and returned to Missouri. They
were co-owners and operators of the Hisle Motel in Gallatin for several
years. Upon retiring they lived in Lawson for several years and then moved to Las Vegas,
NV and had moved to Alvin in the last year.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and several brothers and
sisters.
She is survived by her three sons, John Owen Kent, Lawson, James Cecil Kent, Alvin,
TX, and Kevin Allan Kent, Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Emma Weber, Plattsburg; seven
grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosalie Haynes
Rosalie "Rosie" Haynes, 71, Holt, died Saturday March 9, 2002, at
Oakridge of Plattsburg Care Center.
Survivors include a son, Charles Haynes; two daughters, Brenda Ashcraft and Sandra
Dunlap; a brother, Thomas (Bud) Collins; and three sisters, Faye Wellesley, Leta Wilson,
and Shirley Jean Killian; and six grandchildren.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at the Holt First Baptist Church in
Holt with burial in the Antioch Cemetery, Holt. Morris Bailey Chapel, Holt had charge of
arrangements.
WILLIAM ALFRED "Tampy" PARTON
William Parton, 83, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at his home in Stewartsville.
He was born is Daviess County on Jan. 2, 1919, to Tom and Nellie Fails Parton.
He was married to Ella Faye Shepard and became parents of Nina, Ray, David and
Royer. They were divorced and he later married Winona Smith. She died in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, David; two sisters, Maude Hacker and
Gladys Watkins; and four brothers, Clarence, Tom, Frank and Joe Parton.
William is survived by sons, Ray and Clarence of Stewartsville; Doug, of Platte
City; Joe of Connecticut; and Roger of Atchison; daughter, Nina Cooper, Amity; two
brothers, James, Kansas City and Everett, Stewartsville; two sisters, Adaline Smith,
Savannah and Irene Barton, Oklahoma; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Tuesday morning at the Stewartsville Cemetery.
Bram-Summerfield Funeral Home was in charge.
Cade D. Summers
Cade Dylan Summers, seven week old son of Lisa and Chris passed away on March 8,
2002, at the home in Trimble.
He was born on January, 14, 2002 in Kansas City .

Velma Taylor
Velma Taylor, 82, Osborn, died March 5, 2002 at a local hospital.
Born to Leslie and Thelma Gordon on April 2, 1919, in Stewartsville, she had lived
in Osborn most of her life and was married to Arthur Taylor on Sept. 4, 1935 in
Plattsburg. He preceded her in death along with an infant son, Arthur; a brother, Claude
and three grandchildren.
Velma was a homemaker, a member of TOPS, the War Mother's Organization, Missouri
OATS Bus Organization and the Osborn Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Jack of Liberty and Lonnie of Osborn; daughters, Dorothy
Shepherd of Gladstone and Mary O'Connor of Osborn; 11 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren;
26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Lloyd of Parkville; twin
sister, Zelma Rogers of Osborn; and half-sister, Opal.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Osborn Baptist Church with
burial in the Lathrop Cemetery. Bailey Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Howard L. Cheek, Sr.
Howard Lee Cheek, Sr. age 80, of Kansas City, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002,
at the North Kansas City Hospital.
Howard was born June 10, 1921 to Ollis Ray and Mary Blanche Burris Cheek, in Holt
and had lived in the Kansas City area most of his life. He was a member of the Liberty
Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Ararat Shrine Temple, all in Kansas City. Howard
was a retired truck mechanic for Wade Transport in Pleasant Valley.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Raymond and a sister, Effie
Regina Kelp.
Survivors include two sons, Howard, Jr. and Ronald Gene, both of Grove, OK; 6
grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, James Ray Cheek of Modesto, CA; a sister,
Mary Helen Slater of Damascus, MD and his companion, Lillian Hayes.
Graveside services and burial with Masonic Burial Rites were held Thursday, March 7,

Norton D. Bowers
Norton D. "Deacon" Bowers, age 81, of Lathrop passed away Monday, March
4, 2002 at the North Kansas City Hospital.
Deacon was born Sept. 18, 1920, to Moses and Minnie Perch Bowers in Holt and had
lived in the Lathrop area most of his life. On October 25, 1941, he was united
in marriage to Ava "Onnie" Greer in Lathrop and she preceded him in death in
1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, James, Raymond, Pete,
and William and a sister, Etta Wilson.
He was a member of the Lathrop United Methodist Church, and former Church Board
member; member of Lathrop Volunteer Fire Department having served as fire chief for 35
years; Army veteran of WWII; former city council member; former Lathrop Cemetery
Association member; former citizen of the year; FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer. He had owned
Bowers Cleaners with his wife, Onnie, in Lathrop for 42 years. At the time of his death,
he was still a member of the Lathrop Senior Citizen's Housing Board and the Zoning Board.
Survivors include a son, Gary Bowers of Kansas City; a daughter, Jenifer Whitteck of
Kearney; a brother, Walter of Lathrop and two sisters, Gertrude Clute of Lee's Summit and
Velma Culver, of Lathrop; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 8, 2002 at the United Methodist
Church in Lathrop with burial in the Lathrop Cemetery. Bailey Funeral Home had charge of
arrangements.

Josephine R. Stai
Josephine Ruth Stai was born on May 25, 1916 in Jackson, MN, the daughter of
Joseph and Anna (Steinocker) Meyers. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1935. After
graduation, she worked as a sales clerk for a local hardware store and had worked at
Worthmore Ice Cream in Jackson as well as for DeKalb Seed Company also in Jackson.
Josephine was united in marriage to Julius "Swede" Stai in Austin, MN.
After her marriage, she worked as a secretary for "Doc" Haynes at his State Farm
Insurance Agency in Jackson.
Three weeks ago, she moved to Turney to be with her daughter, where she passed away
on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 5 days.
Joey was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and later, the Church of
the Good Shepherd in Jackson, where she attended daily mass and had been active in the
sewing circle. She enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint.
She and Julius had owned a cabin on Big Spirit, where they had many big family
reunions. She had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and had helped with their
Bingo nights. Joey was a wonderful person and will be missed by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death by her parents, her husband, 3 sisters, Helen Meyers,
Sarah Meyers and Agnes Temple and a brother, Joseph Meyers. Survivors include her
daughter, Bernadette and husband, James Shoate of Turney; 5 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren ; and a sister, Irene Lawler of Fort
Dodge, IA.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the Good Shepherd Catholic
Church in Jackson with interment in the Good Shepherd Cemetery. The Sathe-Osterberg
Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Evelyn R. Kent
Evelyn R. Kent passed away early Wednesday morning, February 27th at Clearlake
Medical Center in a Houston, TX.
She was 79 years old, born in Perrin on November 20th, 1920.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 56 years John R. Kent.
Having lived in Plattsburg, Gower, Gallatin, Gladstone, and Lawson, as well as
Denver, CO and Las Vegas, NV, she has lived in Alvin, TX for the past year.
Survivors include 3 sons. John O. Kent of Lawson, James C. Kent of Alvin, TX. and
Kevin A. Kent of Henderson, NV; a sister Emma Webber of Plattsburg; 9 grandchildren, 3
great-grandchildren, as well as family and friends. A graveside service for the burial of
her ashes at Perrin is pending for late this spring.
Edna Eberts
Edna (Tanner) Eberts, 102 of Edgerton passed away, Sunday, March 3, 2002 at
Beverly Health and Rehab in Smithville.
She was born on October 9, 1899 to William Frank and Eliza Jane (Woodward) Tanner
near Edgerton where she attended school and grew up.
Edna was united in marriage to William J. "Bill" Eberts. After their
marriage they lived in Plattsburg, Cameron and in 1950 they moved to Edgerton where they
made their home. Her husband, Bill, passed away in 1959.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Rector, Henry, and
E.R. "Buck" Tanner and three sisters, Florence Bledsoe, Helen Foster and Marvie
Dick.
Edna is survived by several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral
Home, Edgerton with burial in the Ridgely Cemetery.
Nellie A. Beam
Nellie A. (Sten) Petrovich Beam, 80, St. Joseph, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at a
St. Joseph health-care center.
Mrs. Beam worked as a licensed practical nurse for 18 years for Dr. William Redmond
and in the nursery of the former St. Joseph's Hospital for many years.
Born in St. Joseph on June 16, 1921, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
Mrs. Beam graduated from Benton High School and attended college for two years
receiving a licensed practical nurse certificate. She was a member of St. James Catholic
Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Steve Petrovich; her second husband,
T.J. Beam; a brother Walter "Lottie" Sten; a sister, Julia Chirila; and her
parents, Theodore and Anna Marie Sten.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Petrovich, St. Joseph, James Petrovich,
Lafayette, CO; Leo Petrovich, Newport Ritchey, FL and Steven Petrovich, Gower; a daughter,
Julia Ann Wall, Savannah; a sister, May Fix, St. Joseph; eight grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the Rupp Funeral home, St. Joseph
with private family burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Steve F. Carr
Steve F. Carr, 85, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Kansas City, KS, passed away,
March 28, 2002 in Phoenix.
He retired from K.S. Dart Trucks, was a World War II Veteran, and was a member of
the Pearl Harbor Survivors Club. He was a former member of Blessed Sacrament Church,
Kansas City, KS.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Thula Hooper-Carr of Gower; his
parents, Steve and Katie Carr; brother, Joe Carr; and sisters, Helen van Alden, Ann
Jones-van Alden and Mary Long.
He is survived by a brother, John A. Carr, Phoenix; and sisters, Angie Solomon,
Kansas City, KS and Agnes Langan, Floral City, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service and Inurnment was held Wednesday, April 10th at the Allen
Cemetery, Gower with Hixson and Klein Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements.
Willie E. Hunsley
Willie Hunsley, 98, of Amarillo died Saturday, April 27, 2002.
Graveside services were held at Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Marvin
James and the Rev. James P. Cobb, of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial was
also in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Blackburn Shaw Funeral
Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mrs. Hunsley
was born in 1903 in Plattsburg, Mo., to William and Elizabeth Parr where she lived until
her marriage to Arch B. Hunsley. In 1924 they moved to Amarillo until 1946 at which time
they moved to a ranch outside of Canyon. They later subdivided this land into
"Hunsley Hills." She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Brown Adams and husband, Bill, of
Corpus Christi; two sisters, Gladys Dowell and Dorothy Fagin, both of Amarillo; four
grand-children, Charles Joseph and wife, Carolyn, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Susan Brown Gully of
Houston, Henry Marshall Brown and wife, Ellen, of Jackson, Miss., and A. Barker Brown of
Corpus Christi; eight great-grand children; and a great-great-grand son.

DOC BAKER PASSES
Maynard Lee "Doc" Baker died Sunday, April 28, 2002,
at a St. Joseph hospital. He was born at Easton, March 15, 1911, to Joe and Lucy Kerns
Baker.
He attended the Spring Hollow School in the Easton area. He
was a farmer and a resident of Stewartsville all of his adult life. He served in the
Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Stanley,
Victor, Peter and John Baker; and two sisters, Anna Ellis and Letha Keller.
He is survived by his niece, Daralyne T~lomas, StewaL-tsville, of
Stewartsville, with whom he had make his home for the past five years; and other nieces
and nephews.
Services at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 30, at the Bram-Summerfield
Funeral Home in Stewartsville. Burial will be in the Freeman-Kerns Cemetery with
military honors conducted by the Robison-Beeching Post No. 508.
Glo Rena Brown
Glo Rena Brown, 87, of Smithville, passed away, April 26, 2002 at St. Luke's
Hospital in Kansas City.
She was born on December 9, 1941 to John Frederick and Myrtie Evonia (Mast) Barber
in Skidmore. Glo attended school and grew up in Skidmore and in 1933 she graduated form
Liberty High School in Liberty. Glo lived in Liberty, Kansas City and Hunnewell, later
moving to Smithville where she made her home.
She was a member of Little Platte Baptist Church, near Smithville, for many years.
Glo was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Joseph Robey and Pat Brown, and
three brothers, Lloyd, Ralph and Paul Barber.
Survivors include Jacob Schmitt, a daughter, Elaine Stubbs and husband Curtis,
Edgerton; two sons, Joe Robey and wife Carolyn, Gladstone and John Robey and wife Carol,
Kansas City; grandchildren, Ralph and wife, Barbara, Jack, Jim, Laura, Karen, Beth, Brian
and wife, Kari, Kyle and wife, Kath and Christy; twelve great-grandchildren and one
great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Sara Blummer, Houston, TX and Elizabeth Brown and
husband Lyle, Smithville; several niec4es and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the Little Platte Baptist
church near Smithville with burial in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Smithville.

Lewis E. Downing
Lewis Eugene (Gene) Downing, 78, Holt, died Thursday, April 25, 2002 near
Montgomery City, MO from a car accident. He was born June 17, 1923 ln Holt and
was a llfelong resident of the area. He had retired from Ford in 1983 and was a
farmer.
On June 2, 1947 he married Helen L. Cavender and she survives of the home.
Additional survivors are, a son Tim and his wife Karen of Holt; 3 daughters, Pamela
Brown, Holt, Cathy Shepherd and husband Rick, Indianapolis, IN and Jackie Adkins, Holt; a
brother Charles Downing, Palm Harbor, FL, a sister, Betty Kate Trotter, Plattsburg; 18
grandchildren, Jenny Brown, Becky Lucas, Jodi Brown, Chad Adkins, Colby Adkins, Ciera
Adkins, Riley, Alex and Gene Downing, Katrina, Luke, Joe, Lela, Sarah, Martin, Chrls,
Micah and Ben Shepherd; 3 great-grandchildren Tony Giardenell, Taylor and Zachary Lucas.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph Lewis and Frances Pickett Downing
and a sister, Pauline Leader.

Betty A. Taylor
Betty Ann Green Taylor, 77, Lathrop passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at her
home.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Kansas City and lived in Kidder before moving to Lathrop in
1988.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lathrop.
Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lucille Carter; a son,
Mervin Green; a daughter, Carol Jean Carter; a brother William Carter; and a sister,
Lorriane Roe.
Survivors include a son, Roger Green Stewartsville; three daughters, Diana Taylor,
Lathrop, Karen Arney, Omaha, NE, and Linda Rhodd, White Cloud. KS; seven grandchildren and
a great-grandchild.
Services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Lathrop with burial in the
Winston Cemetery.
Mildred M. Justus
Mildred M. Justus, 88, of Trimble, formerly of Plattsburg, passed away, Monday,
April 22, 2002 at her home.
She was born on November 2, 1913 to Edgar Montjoy and Maggie Fern (Holt)
Rogers in Plattsburg where she grew up and in 1931 graduated from Plattsburg High School.
On July 4, 1946 she was united in marriage to Paul Eugene Justus in Olathe, KS.
After their marriage they lived in Plattsburg until 1951 when they moved to Trimble where
they made their home. Her husband Paul preceded her in death on October 25, 1979.
Mildred worked for the conservation commission at the Trimble Wildlife Area and
later for Farmland-Coop Demonstration Farm in Trimble, in the office, for many years.
In 1920 Mildred joined the Broadway Methodist Church in Plattsburg and in 1979 the
Trimble Baptist Church.
Mildred was also preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Helen Justus, Smithville, cousins, and many
friends.
Funeral service was held Wednesday, April 24th, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville with burial in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg.
Donations may be made to the Trimble Baptist Church or the Humane Society.
Kenneth R. Hughs
Kenneth R. Hughs, 55, Lathrop died Sunday, April 21 at his home.
The body will be cremated under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop.
Cory L. Lanham
Cory Lee Lanham, 17, of Edgerton, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2002 near Camden
Point as the result of a vehicle accident.
He was born on February 28, 1985 to Rick and Janet (Warren) Lanham in Kansas City.
Cory attended school and grew up in Edgerton and was a Junior at North Platte High School
in Dearborn.
Cory previously worked at Burger King in Smithville and was currently working at
McDonald's in Platte City.
He was a dedicated volunteer for the Edgerton-Trimble Fire Protection District as a
Cadet Firefighter.
Cory was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Truby and Mary Lanham.
Additional survivors include his twin brother, Eric; two sister, Nicolle Ashpaugh,
Rushville and Rachel Gregory, St. Joseph; maternal grandparents, Edmund and Mary Warren,
Independence; four nieces and two nephews; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services are being held Thursday, April 25, 2002 at the Mt. Zion
Baptist Church in Edgerton with burial in the Ridgely Cemetery.

Harry A. Lawson
Harry Andrew Lawson, 92, of Gower, passed away, Friday, April 19, 2002 at his
home.
He was born on February 4, 1910 to Harrison Morton and Josephine (Nabity) Lawson in
Dunning, NE.
On December 19, 1931, he was united in marriage to Inez Snowden. After their
marriage they lived in Aurora and later moved to Birmingham. In 1951 they moved to the
Mecca Community, rural Trimble and 1979 they moved to rural Gower. His wife, Izez, passed
away, August 18, 1998.
They farmed in the Gower and Trimble areas. Harry also worked for North American
Aviation, Lend-Lease Projects, Smithville Engineering, and American Can Company, all in
Kansas City and Clinton County Highway Department.
Harry was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Plattsburg and the International
Association of Machinists Lodge 92, in Kansas City.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harvey Lawson; a
great-grandson, Timothy Lawson; a brother, Clarence Lawson; and three sisters, Anna
Lawson, Francis Nash, and Loretta Decker.
Survivors include a son, John Lawson; two daughters, Wealtha Marshal and Donna King;
eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a
brother, Bill Lawson; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Gower with burial in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg.
Eileen L. Corn
Mrs. Eileen Lavora Corn, 90, of Plattsburg died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the
Clinton Care and Rehab Center. Mrs. Corn was born on February 25, 1912, in Kansas City.
Mrs. Corn has been a resident of Plattsburg since 1945.
She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Primative Baptist Church of rural Plattsburg
and The Stony Point Extension Club. She married Francis Corn in 1942. He survives of
the home. She was employed by the Smithville Hospital where she retired in 1978.
Mrs. Corn was preceded in death by her parents Perry and Maude (Moore) Burch.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn of Plattsburg and Jim (Bev) Corn of Kearney; three
grandchildren, Keyna Corn of Indianapolis, IN, Tricia Corn of Columbia and Tara (Eric)
Hall, of Tipton.

Martha F. Todd
Martha F. Todd, 90, of Gower formerly of Agency passed away, Wednesday, April 17,
2002 at the Gower Convalescent Center.
She was born on January 29, 1912, to Pierce and Grace (Duncan) Boydston near
Edgerton where she grew up and later graduated from Dearborn High School.
On December 15, 1928, she was united in marriage to William "Bill" Jackson
Todd. After their marriage they lived in Edgerton, Faucett and later farmed near Agency.
They also owned and operated Todd's Trucking Company.
Martha was a member of the Dearborn United Methodist Church in Dearborn and also
the Rockhouse Extension Club in Agency.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill, a brother, Ben Boydston
and two sisters, Gladys Abbott and Alma Stalder.
Martha is survived by a son, Donald Todd and wife Barbara, Dearborn; a daughter,
Martha Henderson and husband, Bob, Palatine, IL; five grandchildren, Debbie Lynn, Bill D.
Todd, Holly Fisher, Lynn Munson and Joan Menke; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna
Masoner, Edgerton, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 19th, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral
Home, Edgerton with burial in the Davis Chapel Cemetery, Dearborn. Donations may be made

Lloyd I. Gordon
Lloyd Ivan Gordon, age 74, of Gladstone, formerly of Lathrop died Friday, April
12, 2002 at Woodbine Healthcare in Gladstone. He was born October 22, 1927 in
Stewartsville to Leslie and Velma Christian Gordon. He was an Army veteran and had worked
as assistant warden at the City Jail in Mobile City, AL.
Lloyd is survived by a son, Lloyd Jr. of Kansas City; three daughters, Kathy Taylor
of Gladstone, Stephanie Holly and Angela Scott both of bay Minette, AL; two sisters, Zelma

Eldrige Foulke
Eldridge Foulke died April 14, 2002 at his home in Sedona, Arizona. Born on March 20,
1929 in Webb City, MO, he attended grade and high school in Joplin, MO. He moved to Sedona
in September 1999.
Mr. Foulke attended the University of Arkansas for two years, served in the United States
army and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1957 with a degree in agriculture.
During his career he was involved in the farm supply business and the residential building
and repair business.
He served as a city council member and mayor of Plattsburg, where he resided for 38 years.
Mr. Foulke was lso the zoning administrator for the City of Plattsburg and for Clinton
County, Missouri.
Mr. Foulke was an active participant in the Canyon Mesa Townhouse Association where he was
a member of the Association Board of Directors, and was involved in various board
committee activities.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, a son, Kevin, of Sedona, and a daughter, Becky of
Lincoln, Nebraska, and her two children, Margaret and Sarah.

Raymond A. Kreman
Raymond A. Kreman 63, of Plattsburg, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Oakridge
Nursing Home in Plattsburg.
Born on February 10, 1939, in Glen, NE. Where he resided for many years and
graduated from High School there.
Mr. Kreman was a Vietnam Veteran, and was the owner and operated of a restaurant
in Crawford, NE where he was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, VFW, and
The Crawford Rotary. After moving from Crawford, Mr. Kreman moved to rural Maysville,
moved to rural Maysville where he farmed and drove a school bus for the Maysville School
District before moving to Plattsburg six months ago.
Mr. Kreman was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church.
Mr. Kreman was preceded in death by his wife, Gleva in 1990; his parents Frank and
Ruby (Chrisman) Kreman; a daughter Shaundra Kreman-Miligi; and a grandson Brady Kreman.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Harris of Plattsburg and Summer Teasdale
of Buckner; two sons, Stacy Coryell of Lakewood, CI and Shawn Kreman of Tipton, IA; a
step-brother, Don Noah of Bellevista, AR; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services are being held at 10am Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Cox Funeral
Home, Plattsburg with burial in the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Family
visitation was held from 7 to 8:30pm Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Cox Funeral Home.
Danny Leroy Douglas
Mr. Danny L Douglas, 61, Plattsburg died Friday April 12, 2002 at his
residence.
Mr. Douglas was a maintenance worker with the Clay County Parks Department for
several years.
Born in Independence on April 10, 1941, he lived in Plattsburg most of his life.
In August of 2000 he married the former Francis Sue L'hommedieu, she survives of the
home.
Mr. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents Carter C. and Helen A (Yale)
Douglas. Mr. Douglas was also preceded by a Brother George Douglas.
Survivors include a brother, Buddy Douglas of Oakgrove; a sister,
Patricia Murry of Stockton; nine children; several grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.

Willis Jay Winn
Willis Jay Winn, a Plattsburg native who lived on his family farm in Trimble for the
past 20 years, died following a stroke on Thursday, April 11 at Saint Luke's Hospital in
Kansas City. He was 84 years old.
Willis was remembered in a visitation at the Cox Funeral Home on Saturday.
The funeral was held at the First Christian Church on Sunday, with the Rev. Michael
Brown officiating. Willis' two children, Judith Ann Winn of Shorewood, WI and Steven
Jay Winn of San Francisco, CA, spoke at the service. Willis' great niece, Kim
Gengelbach, played the organ.
The interment followed on a breezy late afternoon at the Brethren Church cemetery.
Willis was proud of the trees he had planted at the cemetery. Rowland
Gengelbach, Mark Hoover, Francis Millikin, Jim Richerson, Harold Rogers and Perry Winn
were the pallbearers.
Willis was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Sell Winn, and his father, Sam
Winn. In addition to his two children, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois
Gengelbach Winn, and his daughter-in-law, Sally Ann Winn, and granddaughter, Phoebe Ann
Winn, of San Francisco.
Willis was born in Plattsburg on April 26, 1917. He attended Plattsburg High
School and graduated from Central College in Fayette, MO in 1939. He received his
master's degree (1940) and Ph.D. (1951) in finance from the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a professor and later dean of that university's Wharton School of Finance
and Commerce from 1958-71. Willis served as president of the Cleveland Federal
Reserve Bank from 1971-82.
Willis and Lois returned to Missouri upon his retirement. He enjoyed
gardening, teaching Sunday school and reading.
A scholarship for deserving Plattsburg High School graduates attending a four-year
college or university has been established in his name. Contributions can be made to

Madison F. Fisher
Madison Faith Fisher, 7 month old daughter of Derek and Shauna Fisher of Kansas
City, died Friday, April 5, 2002 at the Children's Mercy Hospital.
She is survived by her parents, one infant sister, Grace; maternal grandparents
Benjamin and Reha Ridgley IV, of Plattsburg; paternal grandmother Glenna Calfas of
Hamilton; and her paternal grandfather Richard Fisher of Scottsdale, AZ.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister and brother, Lauren and Brayden.

Chad L. Parsons
Chad L. Parsons 27, of Trimble, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 as a result of
a motorcycle accident in Overland Park, KS. He was born on Aug. 16, 1974 in St.
Joseph.
Chad was a 1992 graduate of Plattsburg High School and a 1996 graduate of Missouri
Western State college where he majored in construction engineering. He was employed by
Firebaugh Construction Co. and a member of the Carpenters Union.
Mr. Parsons is survived by his parents, Victor Parsons of Parkhill and his mother
Kay Parsons of Trimble; a brother, Kevin Wharton of Hemet, CA.
Graveside service and inurnment was held Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Green Lawn
Cemetery, Plattsburg with the Cox Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
April D. Otto
April Dawn (Cockriel) Otto, 29, of rural Stewartsville, passed away, Sunday, May
26, 2002 at her home.
She was born on December 22, 1972, in Smithville. April attended school and
grew up in Dearborn and Gower.
On January 24, 1972, she was united in marriage to Joseph Otto. He survives of the
home. After their marriage they lived in Smithville, rural Gower and Edgerton. In
1996 they moved to rural Stewartsville where they made their home.
April was a homemaker and mother and attended Gower Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Linda Lemons, C.B. and Eleanor Cockriel,
Robert and Barbara Cahill and Herb and Neva Gabriel.
Additional survivors include three children, Joseph Marshall, Jacquinn
Michelle and Ellison Thomas, all of the home; her parents, Kenneth and Susan Cockriel, St.
Joseph, Carla and Danny Gabriel, Gower; a sister, Autumn Cockriel; brothers, James
Cockriel, Gower and Jason Cockriel, St. Joseph; grandfather, Ruie Lemons, Lincoln, NE;
father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Anna Otto, Stewartsville; sister-in-law, Janet Otto,

James H. Lunn
Harry Lunn 89, Plattsburg, died Saturday, May 25, 2002.
Mr. Lunn was born on January 30, 1913 in Raytown. He graduated from Manuel High
School in 1931 and Park College in 1940 with a Bachelors Degree in American History. At
Park College he finished 2nd in his class and received Cum Laude honors for his high grade
point average.
Mr. Lunn had the distinction of having two professional careers. The first was with
Western Union, from which he retired at the age of 55. The second with the Post Office
which lasted until his retirement in 1989 at the age of 76.
He was an outstanding Tennis Player winning several armature tournaments in the mid
1930's.
During World War II he served his country with honor in the United States Army.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mensa and St. Ann's Catholic
Church.
On April 19, 1936 he married Dina Maria Allegrini of New York City and
remained married for 66 years until his death. She survives of the home.
Mr. Lunn was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Carrie (Baber) Lunn and two
brothers, Joe and Fred Lunn.
Additional survivors include a son, John Lunn of Kansas City; three daughters,
Elaine Thomas of Syracuse, NY, Maria Killingsworth of Kansas City, KS and Sharon Lunn of
Chicago; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial is being held today, Thursday, May 30, 2002 at St. Ann's
Catholic church, Plattsburg. The family received friends from 7:30-8:30pm on Wednesday,
May 29th with a rosary at 7pm at the Cox Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial

Venita O. Lyon
Venita O. Lyon, 92, Plattsburg, died May 25, 2002 at a Plattsburg nursing home.
Mrs. Lyon was a funeral home owner for many years.
Born in Stewartsville, on March 11, 1910, she lived in Plattsburg most of her life.
She was a member of Broadway United Methodist church, where she was the church
organist for 60 years. Along with the church she played the organ for the Community Chorus
and was an accompanist for the Plattsburg High School for many years. Mrs. Lyon was also a
member of The Order of Eastern Star, P.E.O., Chapter DF of Plattsburg, The united
Methodist Women and Fortnightly Study Club.
On November 22, 1930 she married Darrell Lyon; he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lyon was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary (Wood) Hinderks;
two brothers, W.D. and Blair Hinderks; and a grandchild.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Arnold of Geneva, IL and Carol Ward of Kansas
City; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Broadway United Methodist Church
with the Cox Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial gifts

Winifred Rosander
Mrs. Winifred "Winnie" Rosander, 99, of Topeka, passed away Saturday,
May 25, 2002 at the Oakridge Care Center in Plattsburg. She was born in Topeka on
June 5, 1902 to Charles and Anna Seger Kerle.
Mrs. Rosander attended St. John's Lutheran School. She began her work career as a
telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. Her last 29 working years were spent at the VA
Hospital as a switchboard operator. She retired in 1964.
Mrs. Rosander played catcher for the SW Bell Baseball Team. A lifelong active member
of St. John's Lutheran Church, she belonged to Church Circle and Bible Study; she enjoyed
quilting.
On December 29, 1923, in Topeka she married Edwin A. Rosander; he passed away April
16, 1969.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; and a daughter Nancy Lee Rosander in
1944.
Survivors include a son, Jim Rosander of Plattsburg; a daughter, Edna Mae Senne of
Topeka; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Mike Feo, 78, of Trimble, formerly of Kansas City, passed away Friday, May 24,
2002 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City.
He was born on January 7, 1924 to Patsy and Angeline (Carrione) Feo in Kansas
City where he attended school and grew up.
Mike and his wife Ester, lived in the Kansas City area most of their lives. She
preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kansas City.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include a brother, John, Smithville, several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.

June Justus
June Justus, 79, of Smithville passed away, Thursday, May 23, 2002 at North
Kansas City Hospital.
She was born on June 2, 1922 to Curtis and Dixie (Asher) Summers near Smithville
where she attended school and grew up. As a young child she moved to the home of George
and Lela May (Asher) Wendling. In 1941 she graduated from Smithville High School.
On August 13, 1941 she was united in marriage to Ivan "Pinky" Justus.
After their marriage they lived in San Diego, CA and in 1945 they moved to Smithville
where they made their home. Her husband, Pinky, passed away in 1991.
June was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Smithville.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter, Patricia Ann Willoughby,
and a grandson, Darrin Lynn Willoughby, both in 1963.
Survivors include a brother, Buddy Summers and wife Jerry, Smithville; an aunt, Alma
(Summers) Stubbs, Independence; a niece, Connie Summers Lytle and husband, Dave,
Gladstone; nephews, Donnie Summers and wife, Tina, Lathrop, Dannie Summers and wife ,
Beverly, Smithville; five great nieces and nephews, and two great-great-nieces and nephew,
other relatives and many friends.

Pamela G. Wilkinson
Pamela G. Wilkinson, 54, of Plattsburg, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2002 at
North Kansas City Hospital.
Born in Carrollton on November 29, 1947, she lived in Orrick for 10 years before
moving to the Plattsburg area for the past 23 years. For 37 years Pamela, has shared her
life with Bruce A. Wilkinson. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Wilkinson was preceded in death by her father Charles W. Storm.
Additional survivors include two sons, Cory Wilkinson of Plattsburg and Mark
Wilkinson and his wife, Sharon of Overland Park; a daughter Kimberly Bonner and her
husband Steve of Kearney; her mother, Shirley Mayer of Edwards; and six grandchildren.

Jerry E. Brown
Jerry Eugene Brown, 53, of Santa Margarita, CA, passed away at Mammoth Lakes, CA,
Wednesday, May 22, 2002.
He was born Nov. 18, 1948, the son of Edward and Letha (Lightle) Brown in Keokuk,
IA. He graduated from Hale High School in 1966 and graduated from Central Missouri State
University.
He was married to Denise Dudley on Oct. 10, 1988. She survives of the home.
He was founder and former president of SkillPath Seminars in Mission, KS and
Chillicothe from 1989 until 2000. He loved flying and reading. He served in the Air force
from 1968 to 1972, serving in Vietnam one year.
Additional survivors include two sons, Grant Dudley Brown and Seth Hunter Brown, all
of the home; three daughters, Jennifer Lynn Brown, Kansas City, KS, Becky Leigh Lucas and
husband, Dave of Plattsburg, and Jodi Brown of Kansas City, KS; a sister, Roxanna
McCracken and husband, Randy of Chillicothe; three nieces; two grandchildren, Taylor
Alison Lucas and Zachary David Lucas of Plattsburg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Brown and infant brother, Lowell
Brown.

Jeremy Drake 22, of Gower, Missouri died May 21, 2002 in Gower.
Mr Drake was born on September 27, 1979. Before moving back to
the Clinton County area, Mr. Drake was a member of the St. Joseph, Missouri
Teamsters Union #460.
Surviving are his parents, Tom and Cindy Pangbum of Lee's Summit,
Missouri and Randolph and Jemma Drake of St. Joseph, Missouri; his brother
Chris Drake of Gower; his maternal grandparents Stan and Marylyn Mallory of Brailey,
Missouri and his paternal grandparents George and Phyllis Drake of Gower. Services

Helen Pence
Helen Pence, 88, Plattsburg, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at a Plattsburg health
care center.
Helen was born September 1,1914, in Trimble and was a lifelong resident of the
Clinton County area. On November 3, 1937, she married Charles Pence.
Mrs. Pence was preceded in death by her parents Arch and Ruby (Eberts) Sevell and a
brother Wilbur.
Survivors include her husband Charles J. Pence, Plattsburg; and a sister Opal Pence,
St. Joseph.
Services were held Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the Cox Funeral Home with interment in

Jack D. Gump
Mr. Jack D Gump, 72 of Plattsburg died Saturday, May 18, 2002. He was born on
Dec. 21, 1929 in Princeton, where he attended and graduated from High School. Mr. Gump
worked for the Missouri Conservation Dept. before entering the United States Army in 1952,
after returning from the Korean Conflict he worked as a construction worker. He was a
member of the St . Ann's Catholic Church of Plattsburg, and American Legion Post #97 and
VFW #4428. Mr. Gump also served as Alderman of the 3rd ward of Plattsburg and was a member
of the Construction Union Local 579. Jack lived in Plattsburg for the past 50 years.
On July 21, 1952, he married the former Pauline R. Mallen who survives of the
home.
Mr. Gump was preceded in death by has parents Frank and Josephine P (McCabe) Gump; 2
brothers Raymond and Rome Gump; 4 sisters Viola and Getrude Gump, Dora Davis, and Marian
Howell.

Frances F. Flores
Frances F. Flores, 81, St. Joseph, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Flores worked for Hirsch's Department Store and Noma Lites and retired from
F.W. Woolworth Co., all of St. Joseph.
Born March 3, 1921, in St. Joseph, she was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph;
a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a former member of St. Ann's Altar Society.
On Oct. 5, 1942, she married Joseph Flores. He preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1948.
On July 29, 1950, she married Vivano Flores. He preceded her in death March 11,
2000. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Theodore and Gertie Mae (Gire)
Lopez; two brothers, Dallas and Ralph Lopez; and a sister, Dolores McGaughey.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Parker and Becky Sollars, both of St.
Joseph and Tina Gilmore of Savannah; two sons, Rick Flores of St. Joseph and Mike Flores
of Plattsburg; two sisters, Phyllis Conard and Carmen Jacobs, both of St. Joseph; a

Mrs. Lorane M. Simpson 92, of Plattsburg formerly of Holt, died Wednesday, May
15, 2002, at the Clinton Care and Rehab Center of Plattsburg. She was born in Eagle Grove,
lA on Aug. 17, 1909, where she attended school. She was a homemaker and a member of the
Nashua Church of Christ in Nashua.
She was married to Leonard Simpson; he preceded her in death in 1972. Also
preceding her in death were her parents Lloyd and Lillie (Nighswonger) Phillis.
Survivors include a son Allen Simpson of Holt; a daughter Delores E. Swanson of
Boseman, MT, a sister Twyla Phillips of Richhill, and a grandchild.

Willie Bledsoe
Willie Bledsoe, 63, of rural Gower, passed away, Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at his
home.
He was born on December 25, 1938, to W.A. and Hazel (Adkins) Bledsoe near Edgerton.
Willie attended school and grew up near Edgerton and later graduated from North Platte
High School in Dearborn. He then served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
After his honorable discharge he farmed and raised tobacco in Dearborn and Camden
Point areas, and in 1988 moved near Gower.
Willie was preceded in death by his father, a son and daughter-in-law, Scotty and
Angie Bledsoe; two grandchildren, Bradley Bledsoe and Scott Johnson; and two
brothers, Ronald and Leslie Bledsoe.
Survivors include; his wife, Brenda, of the home; his mother Hazel Bledsoe, Gower;
two sons, Bill Bledsoe of Edgerton and Leslie Bledsoe, Gower; four daughters, Carla
Johnson and Debbie Nichols, both of Edgerton, Tammy Gray, Clarksville. AR, and Sherri
Ritchel, Independence; seventeen grandchildren; a brother, Darrel Bledsoe, Dearborn; two

E. Louise Danner
E. Louise Danner, 84, of St. Joseph, passed away, Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at a
local healthcare facility.
Louise was born September 12, 1917, in Gower. She has lived in St. Joseph since
1982.
She worked for Cramer Chair Company in Kansas City for 25 years, retiring as a
Machine Operator in 1982.
Preceding her in death by her parents, James and Nancy (Mitchell) Maddox; 3
brothers, James, Lowell and William Maddox; two sisters, Helen Colley and Alice Atkins.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Cordonnier, St. Joseph; a son, Jack
Bennett, Plattsburg; 3 sister, Ruth Veraguth, Bertha Mitchell, both of St. Joseph and

Catherine A. O'Brien
Catherine Ann (Stanley) O'Brien, 90, Lathrop, formerly of Princeton, died
Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at the Lathrop Health Facility.
Catherine was born March 6, 1912, in Mercer County and had lived in Princeton before
moving to Detroit, MI where she lived for 74 years.
She was united in marriage to James O'Brien and he preceded her in death.

Margaret L. Justus
Mrs. Margaret (Tunks) Justus, 78, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at the Oakridge
Residential Facility of Plattsburg.
Born near Maysville on December 12, 1924, Mrs. Justus graduated from Maysville High
School in 1942. She married Adam Justus in Santa Barbara, CA on December 10, 1943, and
they lived briefly in California and Virginia prior to moving back to Missouri. The family
has lived in Gower since 1958.
Margaret was a member of the Gower Christian Church and the American Legion
Auxiliary. She had been employed by the United States Postal Service in Gower, from which
she retired in 1987.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam who died in 1992; her eldest son,
Robert Wayne Justus who died in 2001; and her brother, Leland Tunks who died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Justus, St. Joseph; two sons, James of Lawson
and Jerry of Gower; a sister, Carolyn McKinley, Washington; seven grandchildren and
thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 16, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Gower with burial in the Allen Cemetery.
Faye L. Hess
Faye L. Hess, 90, passed away on Saturday May 11, 2002 at a Kansas City, Missouri
hospital.
Born in Lathrop on January 8, 1912, she lived in Plattsburg most of her life.
Mrs. Hess was a homemaker and enjoyed raising livestock on her farm.
Mrs. Hess was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hess; her parents Bert and
Rosie (Hubbard) Rogers; three brothers Clarence, Delbert, and Ronald Rogers.
Surviving: a sister, Virginia Webber of Plattsburg; brother, Glen Rogers of Gower;
and a nephew, Roger Webber of Plattsburg.
Services were held Tuesday, May 14, 2002, Cox Funeral Home,
Plattsburg, with Interment at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Gower.
R. Estill Akers
R. Estill Akers, age 85, of Cameron passed away Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the
Sunset Home in Maysville.
Estill was born October 3, 1916, in Lawson and lived in Clinton County most of his
life, moving to Cameron in 1993. On April 17, 1943, he was united in marriage to Irma Jean
Sweatman in Lawson, she survives of the home. He was a member of the Lathrop Rotary Club,
the Turney United Methodist Church and had worked as the Postmaster in Turney before
retiring in1986.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Georgia McQuerry Akers; a son,
R.E. Akers II, and a brother, Lester Akers.
Additional survivors include his daughter, Echo Frame, Shawnee, KS; a sister,
Virginia O'Dell, Lawson; a granddaughter, Caitlin Lawson.
Services were held Wednesday at the Lathrop United Methodist Church with burial in
the Lathrop Cemetery. Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop had charge of arrangements.
Henry W. Harris Sr.
Henry W. "Hank" Harris Sr., 87, of Trimble, formerly of Smithville and
Buffalo passed away, Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Lathrop Health Care Facility.
He was born on March 19, 1915 to Allen Johnson and Vata Louisa "Lula"
(Carver) Harris near Paradise. Hank attended school and grew up near Paradise and lived in
the Smithville and Trimble area.
On May 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to Shirley M. Carrol. After their
marriage they lived in the North Kansas City area until 1970 when they moved to Buffalo
and in 1980 they moved to Smithville. He worked for cook Paint and Varnish Company in
North Kansas City for twenty-seven years retiring in 1970. He owned and operated a
Boarding Home for Senior Citizens in Buffalo for ten years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; four brothers, Roscoe,
Wylie, Cliff and Jasper "Jap" Harris; and two sisters, Lillian Taylor and Mary
Peck.
Hank is survived by two sons, Ronald Harris, Jacksonville, AR and Henry Harris, Jr.,
Evansville, IN; a daughter, Carol Jean Davis, St. Joseph; several grandchildren one
brother, Donald Harris, Smithville; two sisters, Aliene Harris, Smithville and Daisy
Moore, Trimble; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, 2002, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville with inurnment in the Grayson Cemetery, Grayson.
Alice L. Perks
Alice Laverne (Honeycutt) Perks, 71, Gower, formerly of St. Joseph, died
Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Perks, born in St. Joseph on Oct. 13, 1930, had formerly lived in St.
Joseph. She was a homemaker and of the Presbyterian faith.
On Sept. 11, 1947, she married James c. Perks in St. Joseph. He survives of the
home.
Mrs. Perks was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Cora Honeycutt; five
brothers, Clarence, Donald, Vernon, Ernest and Johnny Honeycutt; and a sister, Mary Bell
Rich.
Additional survivors include four sons, Jim, Gower, Steve, Plattsburg, Kevin,
Hemple, and David Stewartsville; five daughters, Beverly Patterson, St. Joseph, Donna
Miller, Hemple, Mary Edwards, Cameron, Cora Jean Evans, Agency, and Alberta Dungy, Gower.
Services were held Saturday, at the Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph with burial in
Memorial Park Cemetery.
Shirley J. Russell
Shirley J. Russell, 72, passed away on Wednesday May 8, 2002 at her residence.
Born in Havelock, NE on April 19, 1930, she lived in Plattsburg most of her life.
Mrs. Russell worked as a teachers aid for the Plattsburg School District for many
years.
Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her parents John N. and Leona (Hensley) Ford;
a brother Paul Ford and a sister Carol Ford.
Surviving: husband, Mike of the home; two sons, Wayne Ford of Stewartsville; and
John Ford of Texas; a daughter Jannie Aubchon of Plattsburg; 6 grandchildren.

Bill J. Anderson
Bill J. Anderson, age 70, of Lawson, passed away May 7, 2002, at the Missouri
Veteran's Home in Cameron.
He was born September 24, 1931, in Lathrop and had lived in the Lathrop and Lawson
areas most of his life. He worked for the Burlington Railroad and later for the Ford Motor
Company for 26 years before retiring. Bill was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a
member of the Assembly of God Church. He was united in marriage to Keron Teague
on March 11, 1957 in Lathrop, and she survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Juanita Mae Wickizer Anderson;
a brother, Bobby and a sister, Juanita Pearl Mick.
Additional survivors include a son, David and his wife Crystal of Lawson; a sister,
Phyllis Peterson of Lathrop; and 4 grandchildren, Shiloh, Gideon, Carson and Jackson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Assembly of God Church in
Lathrop with burial in the Lathrop Cemetery. Arrangements were made under the direction of
the Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop.
Kelly L. King
Kelly Lloyd King, 56, Gladstone, formerly of Lathrop, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at
Woodbine Health Care Center, Gladstone.
Kelly was born June 22, 1945 to Roy and Flora Mae (Sudie) King in Lawson. He was a
member of the First Christian Church, Lathrop. He had retired from Corn Products in Kansas
City after 36 years. He was a graduate of Lathrop High School and lived most of his life
in the Lathrop area.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Don and Flora Young, Kansas City, KS;
a son Kelly K. King, Nixa; daughters, Shelly Lynn King and Julie Kay King, Gladstone; a
brother, Roy W. King, Jr., Salina, KS; a grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 8 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop with
burial in the Lathrop Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church organ
fund or Kansas City Hospice.
Robert R. Sayer
Robert "Robby" Ross Sayer, 27, passed away early Saturday morning, May
4, 2002 at his home in Lathrop.
Robby was born in Chillicothe on July 29, 1974 to Bob and Linda Sayer of Meadville.
He then moved to Lathrop with his parents in 1977. He attended school at the Cameron
Development center and the Special Services School.
Robby touched the lives of everyone who met him with his bright eyes, sweet smile,
warm heart and Lots of Love.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Ross Caselman of Meadville and
paternal grandparents, Robert and Josephine Sayer of Brookfield.
Additional survivors include his sister, Sandy Gattenby of Lenexa; grandmother,
Mildred Caselman of Marceline; numerous aunts, uncles and other relatives, teachers and
friends who will miss him.
Funeral services were held at the Lathrop Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 7, 2002
with burial in the Cameron Evergreen Cemetery with Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop in charge
of arrangements.

Earl "Toad" West
Earl "Toad" West, 84, of Gladstone, formerly of Edgerton passed away,
Saturday, May 4, 2002 at the St. Luke's Northland Hospital in Smithville.
He was born on May 31, 1917, to Pearl Turner and Mabel Daisy (Davis) West near
Edgerton, where he grew up and later graduated from Edgerton High School.
On January 17, 1939 he was united in marriage to Ruth Anna Scott in St.
Joseph. After their marriage they lived north of Edgerton where they farmed and made their
home. Earl was also involved in selling farm products for many years. In 1991 they moved
to Gladstone.
Earl was a founding member and served as a board members of the Edgerton Fire
Department. He was active in youth baseball and coached Little League and Pony League for
many years. He was also active in 4-H and the national Farm Organization.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, J.C. West, Allen
"Doc" West and Alonzo West; a sister, Marguerite Pulliam and an infant brother,
Pearl, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann of the home; three sons, and their wives,
Timothy and Sharon West, New Hampton, Ted and Ann West, Lenexa and Tommy and Lori West,
St. Joseph; two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Bill Steinman, Lead Hill, AR,
and Janet and Ed White, Gladstone; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother,
Clarence West, Edgerton and a sister, Betty Lee Boydston, Dearborn; several nieces and
nephews and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Edgerton with burial in
Allen Cemetery, Gower. Donations may be made to the Earl West Memorial Fund.
Jasper A. Harris
Jasper August "Jap" Harris, 90, of Gower, formerly of Trimble passed
away Friday, May 3, 2002 at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower.
He was born on August 1, 1911, to Allen Johnson and Vata Louisa "Lula"
(Carver) Harris in Clay County near Paradise where he attended school and grew up.
On April 9, 1933, he was united in marriage to Alma King. After their marriage they
lived in Clay County, near Paradise. In 1959 they moved to Trimble and in march of this
year they moved to Gower.
Jasper farmed and also was a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed woodworking.
He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Trimble and the Independent
Order of Oddfellows in Paradise.
Jasper was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roscoe, Wylie and
Clifford Harris and two sisters, Lillian Taylor and Mary Peck.
Survivors include his wife Alma, of the home; a son, Jasper C. Harris
and wife, Patricia, Quartzsiete, AZ; two daughters, Donna Jan Stanton and husband, Wayne,
Napoleon, and Dorris Ann Mangum and husband, Joseph, Independence; eight grandchildren,
Clinton, David, Rick, Keith, Kelvin, Don, Dean and Diana; seven step-grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren, twelve step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Harris, Lathrop
and Donald Harris, Smithville; two sisters, Aliene Harris, Smithville and Daisy Moore,
Trimble.

Marjorie L. Carter
Marjorie L (Montgomery) Carter, 80, Plattsburg, formerly of Cameron died
Thursday, May 2, 2002.
She was born on Dec. 23, 1921, to Homer and Cecil Montgomery.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the First Baptist Church, Cameron with

Marva L. Soderstrom
Marva Lea Soderstrom, 56, Lathrop died May 1, 2002 at the KU Medical Center,
Kansas City, KS.
She was born August 7, 1945 in New Orleans. On January 17, 1983 she married Donald
W. Soderstrom in Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Marva was a member of the First Christian Church, The Christian Womens Fellowship,
former Choir Member, Sunday School teacher, Worship Chairman, Deacon, CWF Chairman and
Office Secretary. She was a member of Jobs Daughters, Chapter 2 in Kansas City, KS and
Easter Star Acadia #42 in Polo.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, Marvin and Betty Henry.
Survivors include daughters, Carrie Lynne Galvin, Bonner Springs and Kelly Denise
Campbell, Blue Springs; step-daughters, Shyla Downing, Houston, TX and Susan Young, Hummel
TX; step-son, Jerry Soderstrom, Kansas City; two brothers, William Henry and Corwin
Henry both of Lathrop; two sisters, Marsha Beasley, Lathrop and Melissa Waters,
Smithville; 13 grandchildren; 4 nieces and 3 nephews.
Memorial Service was held Saturday at the First Christian Church, Lathrop. The body
was cremated with Bailey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy McClung
Dorothy McClung, 84, formerly of Lathrop, died Wednesday, June 27, 2002.
Survivors include sons, Jack and Tom Ganaway; daughters, Joyce Gensheer, and Marilyn
Osborn; brothers, Harry, Bill, Bob and Dale Wilson; 12 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, June 29, at Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop. Burial in
Lathrop Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the American Lung Associtation or Southern Care
Hospice.
Charles W. "Bill" Simon
Charles W. Simon, 75, of St. Joseph, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at a St.
Joseph health-care center.
Born on January 30, 1927, in Corder, MO, he lived in the Dearborn and Gower areas
most of his life, before moving to St. Joseph in 1966.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy and earned the following medals:
The World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Phillipine Liberation
Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
On July 23, 1947, he married the former Virginia M. Clifton. She survives if the
home.
He was a lead mechanic for Trans World Airlines at M.C.I. Airport in Kansas City, for
32 years. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Simon was a member of the Christian faith and International Association of
Machinists Union Local of Riverside.
He was preceded in death by a son, John; his parents John W. and Helen Simon; two
sisters, Helen Stuart and Mary Simon; and three brothers, John H. Simon, Ernest Simon Sr.
and Robert Simon Sr.
Additional survivors include four daughters, Jo Herpel, Easton, Annie Stallard,
Gower, Sandy Judd and Tammie McCoy, St. Joseph; four sons, Ken Simon, Boulder, CO,
Robert, Charlie and Donnie Simon, St. Joseph; 21 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren,
six step-grandchildren, and 17 great-step-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, June 24, at Meirhoffer Family Funeral Service, St.
Joseph, with Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.
In Memory of Lee Norah Kirk
Lee Norah Kirk was born on November 15, 1913, to Goldie Wilson in St.
Joseph. She was raised by Eugie Lewis in Smithville, where she grew up and later graduated
from Smithville High School.
On July 30, 1932, she was united in marriage to Lyman T. Kirk. After their marriage
they lived in the Gower and Turney areas and later moved to Lawrence where they made their
home.
Lee Norah attended and worked at Trinity Lutheran Nursing School in Kansas City and
was later employed at Lawrence Memorial. She was a member of the Lenexa Methodist Church
and a member of the University Home Economics Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Lyman.
Lee Norah is survived by two sons, T.E. Kirk, Edgerton, and Lewis Kirk, Lawrence;
one daughter, Elizabeth Snavely, Perry, KS; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren,
and one great-great-granddaughter, other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services and burial were held in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, KS, on June
25, with the Rev. Jack Snavely officiating.
In addition to their own progeny, members of the family related to Lee Norah and her
husband Lyman Kirk, who attended the graveside service are: The Rev. Frank Hall and wife
Gerry Fry Hall of Savannah, MO, Page Kirk Cambell, Overland Park, Halkalne K. Bergsten,

Betty Kirk Waite and husband Ivan were not present as they had departed for a booked
travel departure that same day. Betty's mother, Ruth Kindred Kirk was a sister to Lee
Norah's mother, Mrs. Eugie Lewis.
Ardell L. McBride
Ardell McBride, 96, of St. Joseph, died Monday , June 24, at a Gower
health-care center.
Mrs. McBride was born on July 9, 1905, in Hemple, and was raised in Union Star
before moving to St. Joseph in the 1930's. In 1929, she married Oliver James McBride. He
preceded her in death.
She was a secretary for the former American National Bank, retiring after 20 years.
She was a member of the First baptist Church of St. Joseph, Westward Ho Chapter No. 12 of
Questers International and the Postal Retirees Association.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Argolis Oliver and Lula Revocomb
(Mitchell) Means; a son-in-law, Robert H. Lindsay; a great-grandson, Justin R. Lindsay;
and a great-aunt Calla Varner.
Survivors include a daughter, Olive June Lindsay of Arlington Heights, IL; a
granddaughter, Janet Lindsay Munsell, Gower; grandsons Roger Lindsay, Palantine, IL
and Douglas Lindsay , Guernee, IL; and seven great-grandchildren.

St. Joseph, with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Memorials may be given

Jerry L. Stracke
Jerry Lynn Stracke, 69, of rural Gower, Mo., passed away, Friday, June 21, 2002
at his home.
He was born on March 9, 1933 to Franklin Leroy and Jenny Matilda (Swensen) Stracke
in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he grew up. Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
War. He later graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.S. in Mechanical
Engineering.
On June 8, 1958 he was united in marriage to Yvonne Schenck. They resided in Blue
Springs, Mo., until moving to Gower in 1978, where they made their home.
Jerry retired in 1998 from the Kansas City Power and Light Company with over 30
years of service. Jerry attended both the River of Life Church in Kansas City and New Life
Full Gospel in St. Joseph, Mo. Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post #393 in
Gower.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Carroll, and two sisters,
Evelyn Fuller and Virgene Cullinan.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Yvonne, of the home, one daughter, Leah Caldwell, St.
Joseph, Mo., son, David Stracke and wife, Lesley, Gower, Mo., grandchildren, Daniel,
Vincent Dean, and Brittaney, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Ruth VanZant
Ruth VanZant, 91, formerly of Lathrop, died June 18, 2002, at Ashton Court Care
Center in Liberty.
Ruth was born April 25, 1911 in Bruno, AR, to John Oliver and Lucy Wade (Nowlin)
McEntire. She was a member of Church of Christ in Kearney, and resided in Lathrop from
1955 - 1987. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Ulas Echol VanZant on November 9,
1986; her son, Joe Brian VanZant; two grandsons; and nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her six children and their spouses, Roy and Marjorie VanZant,
Mulvane, KS; Ray and Minnie VanZant; Joy and Ed Tapp; Gay and Kenny Durbin, all of
Liberty; Loy and Joan VanZant, Kearney; and Ron and Judy VanZant, Farley; 24
grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces
and nephews.

New Hope Cemetary in Holt.
Everett Parton
Everett Parton, 81, of Stewartsville, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2002, at
the home of his sister-in-law, Jane Dungy.
Mr. Parton was born September 2, 1920, in Maysville, to Thomas Eugene and Nellie
Maud (Fales) Parton. He attended Maysville schools, and was a longtime resident of
Osborn.
On March 27, 1941, he married Mary Elizabeth Watkins at Altamont. She preceded
him in death in 2000. Mr. Parton later moved to Stewartsville, and was cared for by
his sister-in-law Jane Dungy.
Mr. Parton was a boiler-tender and boilermaker for Corn Products in North Kansas
City. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the boilermakers union AFL-CIO of North
Kansas City, and also a member of the Assembly of God Church in Cameron.
Survivors include four sons; Everett Parton, and Robert Parton, both of St. Charles;
Bryan Parton, St. Joseph; and Christopher Parton, Stewartsville; six daughters; Cecelia
Holton, Excelsior Springs; Elizabeth Houston and Marie Parton, both of Kansas City;
Deborah Frazier, of Osborn, Esther Parton, of Atlanta, GA; and Lyllian Turnipseed of
Virgil, Ks; one brother, Jim Parton, Kansas City; two sisters, Adelina Smith, Savannah,
Irene Watkins, Oklahoma City; 23 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, June 14 at the Bram-Summerfield Funeral Home with burial
in Mt. Zion Cemetery south of Stewartsville.

Irene (Boydston) Shewey, 96, of rural Trimble, passed away, Friday, June 7, 2002 at
Oakridge of Plattsburg.
She was born on December 29, 1905 to Benjamin Franklin and Mabel (West) Boydston in
Edgerton, Mo., where she grew up and graduated from Edgerton High School.
In 1927 she was united in marriage to Elton R. Shewey. After their marriage they moved to
the Shewey family farm near Trimble. Irene was a farm wife and homemaker and resided on
the family farm for over 70 years, before moving to Oakridge the last two and a half
years. She also worked for Mary Jo McMahon in the Clinton County Assessor's Office for
several years.
Irene was a longtime member of the Stony Point Presbyterian Church. She loved to play
cards and was a member of a bridge club in Plattsburg for over 50 years.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a half-sister, Mary Katherine
Hope, brother, Lawrence Boydston, daughter, Franc E. Tinnen, son, Lawrence Ray Shewey and
grandson, J. David Tinnen.
She is survived by one son, David R. Shewey, Trimble, grandsons, Stephen Shewey,
___________, and Michael Shewey, Trimble, grandsons and wives, Steve and Sue Tinnen,
Plattsburg, Greg and Brenda Tinnen, Los Angeles, CA., great-grandchildren, Susan, Ari,
Greg, Elizabeth and Jim, and one great-great-grandson, Brantley, other relatives and many
friends.

Alma M. Lytle
Alma M. (Gartin) Lytle, 96, St. Joseph, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at a
St. Joseph health care facility.
Born July 1, 1905, in Gower where she attended school, and lived in St. Joseph most
of her life.
Mrs. Lytle was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church, Areme Chapter of the
Order of Eastern Star since 1928 and Chapter BJ of the P.E.O Sisterhood since 1930 where
she served as president from 1942 to 1944. She was a member of the Pony Express China
Painting Club.
Mrs. Lytle was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice F. Lytle in 1970; her
parents, Rev. Alonzo L. and Luella Bundy Gartin; two brothers, Jewell and Earl Gartin; and
a sister, Ivy Lee Ray.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Maurice and Frances Lytle, Clearwater,
FL, and Gene and Rosemary Lytle of Olathe, KS; one sister and brother-in-law, Irma Dean
and Willard Rowland, Gower, and Richard and Shirley Gartin of Duncanville, TX; three
grandsons, Christopher, Patrick, and Steven Lytle; one granddaughter, Katherine Patton and
six great-grandchildren.
Graveside Services and Interment were held Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Memorial Park

Albert J. Pankau
Albert J. Pankau, 91, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the Gower Convalescent
Center.
Born June 19, 1910, in Sheridan. He had lived in the St. Joseph area for most of his
life. During World
War II he served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Pankau was a laborer for the Quaker Oats Company for 23 years before retiring in
1975.
He was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church.
He was married to Louise Lillian Kerns, who preceded him in death in 1997.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Kasmer K. and Ida Bell (Heller)
Pankau; four brothers, Alvin, Jesse, Harlin and Roy; a sister, Nellie; granddaughter,
Angela Courtway; and a great-grandson, Matthew Bohr.
Survivors include, three daughters, Sandy Linder and Debbie King, St. Joseph, and
Penny Hawk of Easton; step-daughter Patricia Perjak; step-son Leroy Fisher; twelve
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Meierhoffer Family Chapel with
Interment at the Freeman Chapel Cemetery, Easton.
Marilyn Jones
Marilyn Jones, 67, of rural Dearborn, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her
home.
Marilyn was born on August 24, 1934 the only child of Dewey and Edna (Hinton) Miller
in Iantha. Her parents preceded her in death. She grew up and attended school in Liberal,
MO., where she graduated high school as the valedictorian of her class, and later attended
business school.
On November 7, 1954 she was united in marriage to Paul V. Jones. After their
marriage they lived near Dearborn, where they made their home. He survives of the home.
Marilyn was a bookkeeper for Witte Engine Works. She was a homemaker and also a
rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office for many years. She retired in 1992.
She was a lifelong member of the former Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints, now, Community of Christ in Trimble, and she and her husband also attended the
First Baptist Church of Dearborn.
Survivors include a son, Mike Jones and wife, LeAnn; a grandson, Del Jones, all of
rural Dearborn; other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Community of Christ Church in
Trimble with burial in the Dearborn Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Community of

Anna Hunt, 95, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002.
Survivors include granddaughters, Linda Hagerman, Lathrop, and Liz Marlatt, Cameron;

great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Alice Bischof, Blue Springs.

Farris E. Grayson
Farris (Deacon) E. Grayson, 75, of St. Joseph, formerly of Plattsburg, died
Sunday, June 2, 2002 at his residence.
Born in Plattsburg, on March 12, 1927, Mr. Grayson lived in
Plattsburg until he moved to St. Joseph in the mid-eighties.
Mr. Grayson worked for both the City of Plattsburg and Clinton County as a city
police officer and a deputy for the Clinton County Sheriff's office. Mr. Grayson retired
from the Clinton County Highway Department in the early nineties.
Mr. Grayson was a Veteran of the United States Army, and was a member of the VFW and
the American Legion, he also was a member of the Tes Trams Social Club, Keystone lodge and
a member of the Allah Temple #6, where he was a 32nd degree Shriner.
Mr. Grayson was preceded in death by his parents Elton (Tag) and Nannie Mae Grayson,
his 1st wife Phyillis Grayson and two sisters Margaret Anderson and Barbara Bingham.
Survivors include his wife Lana Grayson of Kansas City; two daughters Cindy Grayson
of Kansas City and Keely Grayson-Inman of Raytown; two step-sons Darin Smith of Calumet IA
and Barry Smith of New Market; 1 step-daughter Marji Smith of St. Joseph; a sister
Wilmenta (Minnie) Grayson of Plattsburg; 5 brothers Carl and Harold both of Plattsburg,

Allene H. Porter, 86, Cameron passed away on June 1, 2002. Allene was born on
March 12, 1916 on the family farm near Polo. She graduated from Polo High School and
Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville. She taught at country schools, Cameron and St.
Joseph school districts. She married Ben Porter on August 22, 1943 in Cameron. He preceded
her in death in 1987. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Oliver and Elsie Hunt;
daughter, Marilyn Porter; two sisters, Evelyn Hunt and Coleta Austill, Survivors
include, two sisters-in-law, Martha Rice, Polo and Nancy Gregory, Tualatin, OR; Aunt,
Verna Cooper, Polo. She leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Betty P. Brown
Betty Pearson Brown, 71, St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002 at a local
hospital.
Betty was born on April 10, 1931, in Plattsburg and had lived most of her life in
St. Joseph, where she was a homemaker. She was a graduate of the Plattsburg High School.
Betty married her second husband, Melvin Pearson in December of 1986 in Reno, NV. He
survives of the home. She married her first husband, Harold O. "Hummer"
Brown in June of 1948,. He passed away in March of 1983.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, Lewis and Georgia Barnett; a brother,
Charles "Bobby" Barnett; and a sister, Ann Swanson.
Additional survivors include two sons, David Brown and Jerry Brown, both of St.
Joseph; four grandsons; a granddaughter; and three great-grandsons.
Graveside service and interment was held 11am, Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery,

James "Harold" Tippit
Mr. James Harold Tippit, 50, of Plattsburg, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at a
Kansas City hospital. He was born on Feb. 27, 1952 in Tucumcari, NM.
Mr. Tippit was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plattsburg and a member of
the US Postal Union Local 195, Pony Express Branch. He retired in 2000 from the
United States Postal Service after 20 years of service. He was also a Supervisor and
Paramedic for the Tri-County Ambulance District from 1975 to 1987.
In 1981 he married the former Donna J. McClelland who survives of the home.
Mr. Tippit was preceded in death by his mother, Violet (Dockery) Tippit and his
first wife, Deborah May Tippit.
Survivors include his wife, Donna J of the home; 3 daughters, Tonya Tippit, Los
Angeles, CA; Kristen and Amanda Tippit of the home. His father and step-mother, Bill
and Wilma Tippit of Plattsburg; 2 brothers Billy of Plattsburg and Jack of Lathrop; and

Claud V. Hensley, 79, of rural Agency, passed away Friday, July 19,2002 at a
hospital in St. Joseph.
He was born September 12, 1922 to Charles Thomas and Lulu Mae (Harris) Hensley in
Elijah, MO. Claud served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.
In 1971, Claud and his wife, Pauline, moved to rural Agency. He retired from
Ford Motor Co. in 1982 and then worked at the Gower Convalescent Center. He was a
member of the Frazier Baptist Church; United Auto Workers Local No. 249; the VFW Post No.
6654, Desoto, KS; Gower American Legion Post No. 393; and the Goods Sam Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Elmer; five sisters, Maggie
Lewis, Agnes Johnson, Delpha Long, Mary Buchanan and Geneva Simpson; one great-grandson,
Jason; and spouses, Dortha and Josephine.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of the home; two sons, Tommy Hensley and wife,

Born on May 16, 1925 in Plattsburg, Mrs. Zulauf was member of the First Baptist
Church of Plattsburg. She was a Dispatcher for the Clinton County Sheriff's Department,
owner of Malone's Restaurant, and a cashier at Hale's Market.
Mrs. Zulauf was preceded in death by her parents Glen A. and Rebecca (Gardner)
Russell; her first husband, Phil Malone; second husband, Dayle Zulauf; a sister, Mary Cox;
and an infant brother, James Russell.

Bill Shanks, 43, of Dearborn, Mo., passed away, Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at North
Kansas City Hospital.
He was born on February 17, 1959 to Walter A.J. and Jewel Maxine (Dovel) Shanks in
Leavenworth, Ks. Bill grew up and attended school in Dearborn, and later graduated from
North Platte High School in 1977. After his graduation he continued living in Dearborn
where he made his home.
Bill worked for Haliburton Construction Co., in El Dorado, Ks., Andrews Construction
in Grandview, Mo., and later Buildex, Inc., in New Market, Mo. He was a member of the
National Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bill was survived by his wife, Pamela, of the home, mother-in-law, Nancy W.
Kirschbaum, Kansas City, Mo., one son, Thomas Long, Jefferson City, Mo., one daughter,
Tricia Courtright, Kansas City, Mo., one daughter-in-law, Michelle McNeary, Dearborn, Mo.,

Verrel Swicegood, 83, of Kansas City, passed away July 23, 2002 at Independence
Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Swicegood was born May 9, 1919 in Cameron. She was a homemaker.

Curtis, and a son, Bobby Glenn Swicegood.

Ruby E. Lorenson
Ruby E. Lorenson, 90, Albany, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Albany Hospital.
She was born Jan. 23, 1912 to Frank and Annie (Burditt) Sims.
Ruby worked at the Gentry County Memorial Hospital for 10 years as a CNA.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she also was a member and past
president of the CWF; Literary Club; Grand River Art Club and Gentry County Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary all of Albany.
Ruby was united in marriage to Raymond Lorenson August 13, 1938. He precede her in
death Feb. 4, 1991.
She also was preceded in death by her parents: brother, William Sims; and grandson,
Larry Stark.
Survivors include: son, Ernie Lorenson, Gower; daughters, Patricia Stark, Albany and
Linda Lambert, Greensburg, KS; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 29, 2002 at Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany.

Larry L. Stevenson
Larry LeRoy Stevenson, 70, of Jonesboro, AR, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. at St.
Bernard's Medical Center.
He was born in Spencer, NE and lived in Kansas City, before moving to Joneboro in
1975.
He was a Customer Service Engineer of IBM, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, a
member of the Fisher St. United Methodist Church, a former member of the Pony
Express Bicycle Club in St. Joseph. He was a graduate of the Lafayette High School in St.
Joseph.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford F. and Letha Stevenson and by
his wife, Patricia Ann Edgar Stevenson.
Survivors include: three sons, Rickey Stevenson, Ft. Worth, TX, Brian Stevenson and
Chris Stevenson, Joneboro, AR; One brother Gordon Stevenson, Gower; six grandchildren; and
five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Monday, July 29 at the Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery

Irving Moses Harris
Irving Moses Harris, 85, of Plattsburg, died Saturday July 27, 2002
at the Clinton Care & Rehab Center in Plattsburg. He was born on March 28,1917
in Trimble.
Mr Harris attended the Shady Grove School in rural Clinton County and The Washington
School of Plattsburg. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church
of Plattsburg and a Member of the Churches Male Chorus.
Mr. Harris retired as a mechanic from the Norris & Sons Solid Waste in
1985, in St. Joseph, MO.
On Feb. 4, 1940 he married the former Kattie Tapp of Lathrop, whom survives of the
home.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Katherine (Bailey)
Harris; 1 son Harold G. Harris; 2 brothers RV Harris and a Infant brother.
Survivors include his wife Kattie of the home;2 sons Robert Harris of
Louisville, KY, Anthony Evans of Stockton, CA, 2 Daughters Marsha Harris of Plattsburg,

LEONE F. OLTMAN
Lee, 86, of Trimble, MO passed away July 29, 2002 at Liberty
Hospital.
Lee was preceded in death by her son Darrell in 1999 and
her husband Louis in 1985. Avid animal lovers, Lee and Louis developed a bloodline
breed, raised and trained nationally known field and show champion Brittany spaniels,
including the first Brittany ever shown on a Hallmark card. They farmed in the
Liberty/Trimble area for 40 years. Lee also worked as a mortgage secretary for over
30 years before her retirement. She and her companion for the last 12 years, Jim
Kirkpatrick, were very active in senior activities. She was President of the Board
of Directors of the Plattsburg Senior Center for 7 years. They regularly attended
dances in the Northland area, and they won the ballroom waltz competition at the
Missouri State Fair in 1992, placed 2nd at the fair in 1993 and 1994.
She is survived by her daughter, Dianne, of Trimble, MO, her
Daughter-in-law Lois Young, Topeka, KS, grandchildren Glen Young, Topeka, KS, Greg Young,
Council Grove, MN, Bobbie Rogers Irving, TX, Randy Young, Jacksonville, FL and Brian
Young, Belleville, KS, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
Memorial Services were held Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at
Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home in Kansas City. In lieu of flowers the family
requests contributions to the Salvation Army or The Humane Society of the United States.

Nellie B. Lowmiller, 94, of Independence, MO passed away
Tuesday, July 30, 2002.
Nellie was born December 21, 1907, the daughter of Curtis and
Rose Walker. She was a member of Park Hill Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Francis D. Lowmiller, her mother and father, one sister and one brother.
Survivors include son Fred W. Lowmiller and his wife, Donna of
Independence, MO; one sister Delma Sumerall, KCMO; grandchildren, Eric Lowmiller and
Andrea Thomas of Blue Springs, MO; great-grandchildren, Ryker and Erika Lowmiller and
Megan Thomas.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Mt. Moriah
Terrace Park Chapel; burial in Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery.

MAURINE F. PHILLIPS
Maurine Frances Phillips, 87, Osborn, passed away on
Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Liberty Hospital. Maurine was born on March 13,
1915, in Hamilton, Mo, to Perry and Jessie Banks.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Osborn United Church.
Maurine married Victor Phillips on Sept. 1, 1932, in Chillicothe, MO. He
preceded her in death 1978.
She also was preceded by her parents; daughter, Dorothy Phillips;
three brothers, John, Ralph and Lee Banks; and a sister, Vera Mae.
Survivors include five sons, Albert and Carl, both of
St. Joseph ; John, Osborn; Jack, Sunrise Beach,; and Gary, Cameron; three daughters,
Shirley Siever, Lawson; Mary Brizendine, Clarksdale., and Kathleen Douglas, Gower.; 24
grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, August 2, 2002 at the Poland-Thompson Funeral Home in Cameron.
Burial: Highland Cemetery in Hamilton.

WALTER F. HARRIS
Walter F. Harris, 64, Higginsville, Missouri (formerly of
Excelsior Springs) passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Walter was born September 28, 1937 to Joseph and Florence (Grayson) Harris.
He was employed with the Excelsior Springs Park & Recreation Department.
He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Main street Baptist Church
and a honorary member of the St. James AME Church in Higginsville, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his mother and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of the home, his father, Joseph Harris, Pleasant
Valley, Missouri, sons, Jason Harris & wife Brenna of Smithville, MO, Sheldon Kinslow
of Plattsburg, Missouri, daughters, LaDonna Sampson, Dale City, VA, LaTonya Stark,

sisters, Charlene Dorsy, Kansas City, MO, Marjorie and husband Lawrence Jackson,

KOREY R. MICK
Korey Ray Mick, 20, Kearney, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, as
a result of an automobile accident.
He was born June 23, 1982, in Smithville, MO, to Wayne R. and
Rita J. (Jones) Mick. He was a 2000 graduate of Kearney High School, where he was a
varsity wrestler for four years and ran cross-country.
Korey was an avid weightlifter and holds the Kearney record for
fastest pin in wrestling. He was majoring in animal science at MU, where he would
have been a junior this fall. Korey loved animals and aspired to be a veterinarian.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ray Mick,
and his paternal grandmother, Evelyn McGuire.
Survivors include his parents, Rita and Wayne Mick, of the home;
brothers, Kirby Mick of the home, Barry Mick, Smithville, Mo.; nephew, Brock Mick;
maternal grandparents, Roy and Charlotte Jones, Plattsburg, Mo.; and numerous aunts,
uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services were held Friday, August, 5, at Fry Funeral
Home, Kearney. Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Kearney. Memorial
contributions may be made to the family for a scholarship in Koreys
memory.

CHARLES TODD, JR.
Mr. Charles Todd, Jr., 84, of Plattsburg, died Thursday August
1, 2002 at a Plattsburg health facility center after a brief illness.
Mr. Todd was born on May 4, 1918 in Osgood, MO. In 1931,
Mr. Todd moved to the Plattsburg area and remained there for 69 years.
In 1942 Mr. Todd joined the U.S. Army and served his county with
pride until 1945. Mr. Todd owned and operated Todds Produce for 10 years and
for 25 years he was a State of Missouri Agriculture Inspector. Mr. Todd was a member
of the First Baptist Church and a former Deacon; a member of the Plattsburg VFW Post
#4428 in which he was a lifetime member and, a 50 year member of the Plattsburg Fire Dept.
On July 20, 1941 he married the former Alma Paisley and was
married for 61 years.
Mr. Todd was preceded in death by his parents Charles A. and
Jessie M. (Burditt) Todd; a son, Ben Todd; two sisters, Mildred Carrington and Clair
Barnett; and a brother Donald Eugene Todd.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Todd of Plattsburg; daughter in-law, Margaret Todd
Hilmer (Ron) of Manchester, MO; sister, Maxola Szulik of Gower; two granddaughters, Lisa
Van Buren (Jeff) of Wildwood and Andrea Schneider (Lucas) of New Melle; three
great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Jason and Justin Van Buren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 5, 2002 at Cox Funeral
Home in Plattsburg. Burial at Cameron Memory Gardens, Cameron, MO.

KEITH ALLEN BENTLEY
Keith Allen Bentley, 45, of Trimble, MO, passed away, Saturday, August 3, 2002 at
North Kansas City Hospital.
He was born on May 31,1957 in Biloxi, Mississippi. He grew up as a military child
and in 1971 his family moved to Kansas City where he attended Park Hill High School.
Keith then served his country in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne from
1975-1978. After his honorable discharge he resided in Kansas City, Mo.
On September 28, 2001 he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Winnie. After their
marriage they lived in Trimble where they made their home.
Keith worked at the Airport Hilton Inn in Kansas City as a chef for 19 years, and later
was the Bakery Manager at Big V in Smithville, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Pritchard; two brothers, Billy
Wayne Bentley and Robert Pritchard, Jr.; and one sister, Deanna L. Pritchard.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; one daughter, Stephanie
"Bear" Bentley, Kansas City; two sons, Malcolm "Moose" Watkins,
and Byron "Squirt" Bentley, both of the home; his mother, Mary Ann Pritchard,
Kansas City; one brother, Bruce Bentley, Kansas City; two sisters, Robin Pritchard,
Camden Point; and Karen Pritchard, Sun City, CA; several aunts, uncles, cousins,
nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. He will be loved and missed by all.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 7th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville,
with burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Smithville, Mo. Donations may be made to the Keith

VERNON M. SELLARS
Vernon Milton Sellars, 84, Stewartsville, died Saturday,
August 3, 2002, at a nursing home in St. Joseph, where he had been a resident for two
weeks.
Mr. Sellars, a retired self-employed carpenter, was born August,
13, 1917, at Stewartsville, MO. He was a son of William and Jenny (Foster) Sellars
and had been a lifelong resident of the Stewartsville area.
A veteran of World War II, he was a Corporal in the Army
Artillery from 1941 to 1945, serving in Panama.
On October 24, 1945, he married Betty Lee Spencer at Troy, KS.
His parents and one brother, Claude Sellars, and one
granddaughter preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; one son, Bill
Sellars; two daughters, Sandra Matter and Pat Lollar, all of Stewartsville; one brother,
Elmer Sellars of Tucson, AZ; two sisters, Marie Oldstedt of Warrington, OR, and May Tue of
Montier, MO; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held Monday, August 5, 2002, at the
Stewartsville Cemetery.

Bessie G. Ellison
Bessie G. Ellison, 99, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at a St. Joseph
health care center.
Mrs. Ellison had been an educator for nearly 50 years. She began her teaching career
at the Oak Forest School near Springfield. She then taught at the former Pleasant Ridge
and Carnegie Schools.
She served as principal for the Oak Grove School and principal for Rock Creek
Elementary Schools in Independence. She served as superintendent for the former Platte
Valley Elementary School for 13 years.
After her retirement in 1967, the Platte Valley Elementary School was renamed in her
honor.
Born Sept. 1, 1902, in Ava, she had resided in the St. Joseph area for most of her
life. She attended Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, and the former Missouri Wesleyan
College, Cameron.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Northwest Missouri State University
and her Master of Arts degree from the former University of Kansas City.
She was a member of the Missouri State Teacher's Association; National Education
Association; Northwest Rural Teacher's Association, of which she was past president;
Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary Society for Women's Education; she served on a
statewide committee on 'Building the Missouri Elementary Curriculum Guide'; was one of 30
persons elected nationwide to participate in an elementary workshop at the
University of Colorado; and is listed in the Who's Who in American Education.
Mrs. Ellison was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church; YMCA; Chapter HV of PEO
Sisterhood and Radiant Chapter No. 88, Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vasal O. Ellison on Jan. 7, 1977; and her
parents, John W. and Ada Twitty Arnold.
Survivors include her brother, W.A. Arnold of Plattsburg; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 10 am at Meierhoffer Family Funeral
Service, St. Joseph. Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts
to Wyatt Park Baptist Church or the St. Joseph School District for use at the Library of
Bessie Ellison Elementary School.

MR. THOMAS L. QUINN
Mr. Thomas L. Quinn, 70, of Plattsburg, passed away Tuesday August 6, 2002 at a
St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Quinn was born on May 29, 1932 in Plattsburg.
In 1952 Mr. Quinn joined the United States Army and served his country with pride
until 1954. Mr. Quinn was a truck driver before moving to the St. Joseph area to own and
operate D.L.Q. Incorporated for 11 years.
In December of 1959 he married the former Rosemary Heath and was married for 43
years.
Mr. Quinn was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Catherine (Taylor) Quinn and
a son Darrell L. Quinn.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Quinn; sons, Paul and Daniel Quinn; and
daughter Nancy Quinn all of St. Joseph; sisters Dora Karch of Gower, Elsie Marsh of
Hermitage, Grace Porter of Florida; brother Bill Quinn of Plattsburg; and three
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday August 8, 2002 at Cox Funeral Home in Plattsburg
with burial in Church of the Brethren Cemetery also in Plattsburg. The family suggests
memorial gifts be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes
Association.

LEONARD R. LUKON
Leonard R. Lukon, 86, of Smithville, Mo., passed away, Thursday, August 8, 2002
at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born in Rockford, Illinois, grew up near Stark City, Missouri, and graduated
from Midway High School. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy Sea Bee's during W.W.
II. After his honorable discharge he moved to Phoenix, Arizona.
In 1937 he was united in marriage to Arlene L. Colwell and she preceded him in death
in 1951. On June 10, 1953 he was united in marriage to Aleen Marie Handly. After their
marriage they lived in Kansas City, Kansas and in 1964 they moved to Smithville where they
made their home. His wife, Aleen preceded him in death on February 26, 1999.
Leonard and his wife, Aleen, founded, owned , and operated the Precision Auto Parts
and Machine Shop in Smithville until 1969.
Leonard served as Mayor of Smithville in 1970 and he attended the First Christian
Church of Smithville.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, William W. Lukon in 1998.
He is survived by two sons, Leonard Lukon, II, Smithville, Mo., John Lukon, Norfolk,
NE. two daughters, Timotheia Haag, Brookfield, Mo., and Sequin Lukon, Burke, Virginia, ten
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held Monday, August 12, 2002 at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Smithville, Mo. Burial at Newtonia IOOF Cemetery, Newtonia, Mo. Donations may be made to
the American Cancer Society.

Roscoe McIntosh
Roscoe "Rock" McIntosh, 70, of St. Joseph, died Thursday, Aug., 8,
2002, at his home.
Mr. McIntosh worked 27 years for the Sheridan Clayton Paper Co. before taking ill in
January. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Roscoe was born on Sept. 24, 1931, in Braley, to Nash and Barbara Ann McIntosh. He
was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. McIntosh was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maude; a brother,
Wayne; and two nephews, Jimmy Drew and Ivan Courtney, Jr.
On July 17, 1955, he married Norma Phillips. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include: three daughters, Debbie Steiner, Diane McIntosh and
Shelly McIntosh, all of St. Joseph; a son, John McIntosh, St. Joseph; two brothers,
Willis, Trimble, and Willie, Topeka, KS; a sister, Dixie Drew, Florida; nine
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St.
Joseph. Mr. McIntosh will be cremated following the service.

DUANE R. "TINY" HOWARD
Duane R. "Tiny" Howard, 80, of Smithville, Mo., passed away, Saturday,
August 10, 2002 at his home.
He was born on May 25, 1922 to Harley Franklin and Nina Elsie (Burdette) Howard in
Paradise, Mo., where he attended school and in 1940 graduated from Smithville High School.
Duane served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in Idaho, and then served his country in
the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 during WWII.
On July 18, 1943 he was united in marriage to Martha Lucille Borgmeir. After their
marriage they lived in Smithville where they made their home.
Duane was a carpenter and Construction Superintendent. He worked on the Truman Library,
KCI Airport, Ten Main Center, Jones Stores, Oak Park High School and Sibley Power Plant.
Duane was also a local Auctioneer for over 40 years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Smithville where he was Elder and
Deacon, and also served as Chairman of the Board. He was a lifetime member of the
Carpenter Local 1904 in Kansas City, Mo. He served on the Smithville School Board for 9
years and was president for 8 years. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Board for 9
years, and the Housing Authority of Smithville for 18 years. Duane was a member of
the Masons receiving a 50 year pin in 2000. He was chosen Honorary Chapter Farmer in 1974
for the local FFA organization, and was instrumental in starting Little League Baseball in
Smithville and coached for many years.
Duane enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in High School and College
Sports.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Howard, parents, two infant
brothers, Glenn and Valdemir, twin brother, Dwight, and sister, Barbara Ann Dubois.
Duane is survived by his wife, Martha, of the home, son, Dr. Richard Howard and
wife, Connie, Spokane, Wa., two daughters, Nancy Anderson and husband, Steve, Lyndon, Ks.,
and Sue Boswell and husband, Bill, Smithville, Mo., three sisters, Martha Nell Edwards and
husband, Jess Alan, Edgerton, Mo., Marilyn Mosby and husband, Ernest, Smithville, Mo., and
Patty Baker and husband, Merlin "Gus", Kansas City, Mo., grandchildren, Dr. John
Anderson and wife, Laura, North Potamac, Maryland, Joe Anderson, Lyndon, Ks., Ryan Howard,
Denver, Co., Nicholas Howard, Overland Park, Ks., Carrie Cissell, and husband, Greg,
Liberty, Mo., and Kelsey and Cody Boswell, Smithville, Mo., great-grandchildren, Hunter
and Cassidy Anderson, Lyndon, Ks., and one unborn great-grandchild., several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Wednesday, August 14th at the First Christian Church of
Smithville, with burial in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Smithville, Mo. Masonic Services were
held Tuesday. Donations may be made to Northcare Hospice or the First Christian Church of

RYAN D. CONSOLVER
Ryan Daniel Consolver, 24, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Union Star, Mo.,
passed away, Sunday, August 11th, as the result of a motorcycle accident.
He was born on June 9, 1978 in St. Joseph, Mo. He attended John Glenn Elementary
School and in 1996 graduated from Savannah High School. While in High School he played
football and was a member of the track team and was a bull rider in the High School Rodeo
Association.
He later received a degree in Construction Engineering from Southeast Community
College in Milford, Nebraska.
Ryan worked for Quality Homes in Kansas City as a union carpenter.
He was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church, St. Joseph, Mo., Carpenter's
Local 110 in Kansas City and the Missouri State High School Rodeo Association.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Nettie Bottorff and Billy
Consolver and maternal grandparents, Frances and Lester Jensen.
He is survived by his parents, Rick and Janis Consolver, and one brother, Brad
Consolver, all of Union Star, Mo., step-grandfather, Roy Bottorff, and step-grandmother,
Betty Consolver, both of St. Joseph, Mo., aunts and uncles, Roger Consolver and Debbie
Consolver, both of St. Joseph, Mo., Jerry Jensen, Kansas City, Mo., and Frances Thetford,
St. Louis, Mo., other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Tuesday, August 13th, at the Green Valley Baptist Church, St.
Joseph, MO
Private family burial will be held at a later date at Blakely Cemetery, Easton, Mo.

Eurith E. Wolfing
Mrs. Eurith Evelyn Wolfing, 90, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at a St.
Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Wolfing was a homemaker and long distance operator for the Southwestern Bell
Telephone Co. for a short time.
She was born Oct. 5, 1911, in Troy, KS, and spent most of her life in St. Joseph.
She was a member of Marvin McMurry United Methodist Church. She also taught
Sunday School and sang in the choir at the former Riverside Presbyterian Church.
On May 11, 1930, she married Tom Ernest Wolfing. He preceded her in death in
1995. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Laura Palmer;
four sisters, Gussie McCormack, Mae Lovell Nellie Brassell and Gracie Palmer; and brother,
Elmer Palmer.
Survivors include: two daughters, Barbara Wolfing of the home and Carol Rice of
Stewartsville; son, Roger Wolfing of St. Joseph; and four grandchildren, Bradley Wolfing,
Amy Clark, Audrey Wolfing and Rebecca Rice.
Graveside service and interment were held Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, St.
Joseph. Arrangements were under the direction of Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service, St.
Joseph. The family suggests memorial gifts to the Marvin McMurry United Methodist Church.

Delores M. Stephens
Delores M. (Cradic) Stephens, 69, Rock Port [MO], died Tuesday, Aug. 13,
2002.
Mrs. Stephens, born in Hamburg, was a member of the Baptist Church and American
Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death her husband, Frank, in 1982, her parents, Silas and Martha
Cardic and a brother, Raymond Cardic in 1994.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Clodfelter, Rock Port and Pamela Maher,
Farragut, IA; three grandchildren; and great-grandson.
Services were held at Rash-Gude Funeral Home, Hamburg [MO]. Burial was in
Hamburg Cemetery.

Wade Jackson Wilhoit
Wade Jackson Wilhoit, entered this world to the delight of his parents and sister
on April 13, 2002. Wade entered into the arms of the holy father on Thursday, Aug. 15,
2002.
Wade was preceded in death by his Maternal Grand Mother Mary Ruth Wade, and great
grandfather Charles DeMoss; Parental Great Grand Parents Walter P. and Etta Wilhoit,
Nicholas and Elisa Mier.
Survivors include his Parents, Nick Wilhoit and Susan Wade- Wilhoit of the home, and
one sister, Emma Kate of the home; Maternal Grandfather Bill Wade of Plattsburg; Maternal
Great Grand Mother Alice DeMoss of Plattsburg; Paternal Grand Parents Walter J. and Carmen
Wilhoit of Trimble; and several Aunts and Uncles and numerous cousins.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of
Plattsburg. Burial was in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg. Arrangements were
under the direction of Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg.

Vernon Francis Edson
Vernon Francis Edson, 79, died Sunday, Aug., 18, 2002 at his farm south of
Stewartsville.
He was adopted by Charles and Fannie (Hill) Edson on June 25, 1923 in St. Joseph. He
attended Neely School in St. Joseph through the sixth grade. He then traveled to Afton,
Wyoming to work on a ranch and there he attended the seventh and eighth grades. Upon
returning to St. Joseph, he attended Benton High School for two years. He loved farming
and came to the James Swope family to help farm until his marriage.
On November 25, 1942 he married Mabel A. Creamer in St. Joseph. They were planning
to celebrate 60 years of marriage in November.
Mr. Edson was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in England, France,
Belgium and Germany.
After the war, he and Mabel began their own farming operation. He helped many area
farmers and then became an Associate Director of the fledging National Farmers
Organization. He spent time organizing in Iowa and Minnesota. He further added to his
education by attending Agricultural School, where he received an Associate Degree. He was
very active in farming until his retirement in March of 1999.
He was a member of the RLDA Church in St. Joseph, the National Farmers Organization,
and the Robinson-Beeching Post #508 of Stewartsville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sons; Larry Vernon
Edson and twins Donnie and Danny; five sisters: Jeanne Osborn, Josephine Campbell, Billie
Armstrong, Nadine Winder and Jerry Myers; 2 brothers: Clark Edson and Herb Edson.
Survivors in addition to his wife include: two daughters; Lynda M. Edson of St.
Joseph and Jodie Stewart and her husband Jim of Flower Mound, TX; one grandson,
Matthew Stewart; two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Forrest H. "Woody" Hay
Forrest H. "Woody" Hay, 56 St. Joseph, Missouri, died Sunday, August
18, 2002, at a St. Joseph hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Hay had worked as a steel gang foreman for the railroad for several
years. He had also been employed as a maintenance engineer for the St. Joseph School
District. For the last two years he had served as pastor of visitation for Green Valley
Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon for many years.
Born June 14, 1946, in Weston, he was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.
On September 17, 1966, he married the former Valta I. Patton. She survives of the
home.
Mr. Hay was a member of NEA and had received the Horace Mann Award from former
Governor Mel Carnahan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Euel E.
and Elizabeth A. Stalder Hay; five sisters, Elizabeth Hatten, Hazel Seals Della Mae
Calloway, Beatrice Jolly and Suellen Moore; and three brothers, Edward Hay, Alonzo Hay and
Charles Hay.
Additional Survivors: four children, Amanda L. Mueller Plano, Tex., Rebecca L.
Courtney, Dorinda K. Pettijohn and Joseph D. Hay, all of St. Joseph; two sisters,
Shirley Dennis, Platte City, Mo., and Madonna Dye, Gower, Mo.; two brothers, Delbert Hay
and Robert Hay, both of St. Joseph; ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday, August 22 at Green Valley Baptist Church.
Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Meierhoffer

Thurman Francis "Jinx" Reed
Thurman Francis "Jinx" Reed, 83, died Monday, August 19, 2002 at a
health care center in Cameron.
He was born on August 26, 1918 to Nova Price and Lena (Anderson) Reed at Perrin.
A long time resident of the Stewartsville area, he was a farmer and worked for the
Jack and John Kilgore Farms.
During World War II, he served in the Unites States Army in Guam and Japan.
He was a member of the Robison-Beeching Post #505 of Stewartsville and the Dearborn
Fox Hunters Association.
On June 8, 1948, he married Rachel Jean Hamm in St. Joseph. She preceded him in
death on January 7, 1996.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by three
brothers, Gene, John and Melvin Reed.
Mr. Reed is survived by three sons; Dan W. Reed, Stewartsville, Tom Reed,
Cameron and Bob Reed, Princeton; one daughter, Sharon Toy, Platte City; two sisters: Mary
Stephens, Stewartsville and Mardella Goad, Bushnell, IL; four grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 at Bram-Summerfield Funeral Home,
Stewartsville. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, south of Stewartsville. The
Robinson-Beeching Post #508 will conduct a military honors graveside service. Memorials

ROSS DIVELBISS
Ross Divelbiss, 69, of rural Stewartsville, Mo, passed away, Monday, August 19,
2002 at his home.
He was born on November 17, 1932 to Guy Ross and Elda L. (Herring) Divelbiss in
Hemple, Mo. He grew up in Renton, Wa., where he graduated high school.
He then served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 14 years during the Korean and
Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge he worked for Boeing Manufacturing Plant in
Washington. In 1968 Ross moved to Plattsburg and later Gower. He then worked for TWA as a
machinist, retiring in 1994.
On October 22, 1983 he was united in marriage to Alice (Hughes) Compton, they made
their home near Stewartsville.
Ross was a member of the Gower Christian Church, and the American Legion Post #359.
He was also a member of the Machinists Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant twin brother, Merwyn Ray.
Ross is survived by his wife, Alice, of the home, one son, Dale Divelbiss,
Snohomish, Wa., step-children, Rick Lewis, Kansas City, Mo., Randy Lewis, and C.L.
Compton, both of Gower, Mo., David Lewis, St. Joseph, Mo., Mona Lewis, Faucett, Mo., and
Becky Perry, Oregon, Mo, three grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, four
step-great-grandchildren, and one aunt, Doris Kelly, St. Joseph, Mo., other relatives and
many friends.
Funeral Services were held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 22nd at the Hixson-Klein
Funeral Home, Gower, Mo.

Annie M. Dotson
Annie Morton Dotson, 99, Gower, formerly of Lathrop, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug.
22, 2002, at a Gower health care center. Born March 25, 1903, in Yell County,
AR, she married Evey LeRoy Dotson. She was the last of 14 children.
Survivors include a son, Harold, Socora, NM; daughter, Peggy Mathia, Lathrop; nine
grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Monday, August 26th in Leavenworth, KS, National
Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop.

Martha Shanks
Martha Shanks, 91, Gladstone, formerly of Holt, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at
New Mark Care Center in Kansas City.
Martha was born February 25, 1911 in Lathrop and grew up in Lathrop and Holt areas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert in 1976.
She is survived by one son: Herbert D. Shanks, Jr., Gladstone; four grandchildren,
and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 29, at Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop.
Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Holt.

Charles Lee Sheppard
Charles Lee Sheppard, 67, of Patterson Bridge Rd. died August 29, 2002 at St.
Joseph Hospital.
Mr. Sheppard, a native of Washington County, GA, had been a resident of Richmond
County for over 20 years. He retired from Austin Industrial as an insulator, and served in
the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Faith Baptist
Church, Blythe, GA.
He is survived by three sons: Richard R. Sheppard, Augusta, GA; Danny Keith
Sheppard, Sanford, NC; Jimmy Frank Sheppard, KCMO; two daughters, Leann Cantrell,
Plattsburg; Pam Huddart, Plattsburg; two sisters, Jan Summerlin, Sandersville, GA; Linda
S. Lamb, Blythe, GA; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and
nephews.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at Davisboro City Cemetery,
Davisboro, GA.

Leonard D. Attebury
Leonard Dowell Attebury, 52, of Collins, formerly of Kansas City, died September
8, 2002 at his home in Collins.
He was born February 18, 1950 in Smithville to Willis Dowell and Betty Ann (Miller)
Attebury.
Leonard was a drywall finisher and also a Vietnam Marine Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his father, Willis on January 23, 2002 and an infant
sister, Victoria Ann Attebury.
He is survived by his two sons, Troy Attebury and Travis Attebury, both of
Pittsburg; his mother, Betty Ann Attebury of Plattsburg; One brother, Ricky Attebury of
Plattsburg; a sister Valerie Attebury of St. Joseph; his longtime companion, Lee Walker of
the home, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral
Home in Osceola. Burial with full military honors was in the Freeman-Holsapply Cemetery
near Collins.

Leonard D. Attebury, 52, of Collins, formerly of Kansas City, died September 8,
2002 at his home.

Charlie K. Ray
Charlie Katherine Ray, 87, Cameron, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at the Liberty,
Mo., hospital.
Charlie was born on March 28,1915, in Cameron to Charles and Katherine Bryant.
She was a cook for 12 years for the Division of Youth Services for the State of
Missouri. Charlie was a member of the Smithfork Baptist Church, where she was baptized in
the fall of 1933.
Charlie married Cleo Oliver Filley on Oct. 4, 1933. He preceded her in death in
1959. She married Bonnie Lloyd Ray on Jan. 1, 1966. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Jane Filley of Cameron; four
grandchildren, Tony Filley, Dallas, TX; Tammy (Filley) Taylor and Terri (Filley) Hahn,
both of Cameron and Travis Filley, Turney, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at Poland-Thompson
Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial was in Harlan Cemetery, Cameron.

Floyd L. "Butch" Irons
Floyd L. "Butch" Irons, 55, Lathrop, died Monday. Sept. 9, 2002 at
Liberty Hospital.
Floyd was born Feb. 21, 1947 in Gashland and had lived in the Gower and Kansas City
areas before moving to Lathrop 24 years ago.
He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the Lathrop Masonic Lodge
#506, and the President of the Midwest Sub Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
He as preceded in death by his father, Laurence; one brother, William; one sister
Corrine Taylor.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of the home; daughters, Lori Jordan and Jennifer
Cobb, of Lathrop; his mother, Rosella Irons of Kansas City; a sister, Janice Pace of
Kansas City; grandchildren, Ashtin, Kodi, Kiersten and Ryan.

VIRGINIA L. ANDERSON
Virginia L. (McClanahan) Anderson, 84, of Smithville, Mo., passed away, Wednesday,
September 11, 2002 at North Kansas City Hospital.
She was born on May 15, 1918 to Fred and Aldyth (Ward) McClanahan near Gower, Mo., where
she attended school and grew up.
Virginia was united in marriage to Howard Anderson, and after their marriage they lived
near Smithville where they made their home. Her husband, Howard, passed away in 1972.
She worked at Sunshine Biscuit in Kansas City, Ks., for many years.
Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Stanley Anderson, two
grandchildren, Cindy and Kevin Anderson, and two brothers, Herman D. and Bill McClanahan.
She is survived by, one son, Kenneth Anderson, of the home, one granddaughter, Christi
Revis, Kansas City, Mo., one great-grandson, Payton, one daughter-in-law, Janice Mello,
Kansas City, Mo., two brothers, Ray McClanahan, Gower, Mo, and Jim McClanahan, Overland
Park, Ks., and one sister, Wardie Hines, Gower, Mo., several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.

Fredrick Neal Clute
Fred Clute passed away early in
the morning of September 17th at the Overland Park Regional Hospital
from complications of a stroke he suffered September 12th.
Fred was preceded in
death by his wife of 38
years, Peggy Ann Keeley Clute.
He was survived by his mother, Gertrude Bowers Clute of Lees
Summit; his bother, Charles Clute and family of Denver, CO; and his sister, Ann Elliott
and family of Bendina, KS. Also surviving are his two sons, Neal Clute and wife Gail
of Kansas City and Paul Clute and wife Laura of Pleasant Hill. His three
granddaughters, Sarah, Katherine and Laura Clute, and five step granddaughters, Jessica
and Kara Shivley, Desire Bates, Annessa Uberrouth and Elaine Gerken will miss their Papa.
Fred was born near Plattsburg and
grew up on his family farms in and around Plattsburg and Lathrop.
He graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1950. He served in the United
States Air Force where he reached the rank of Master Drill Sergeant and was an instructor
for jet aircraft mechanics. Fred worked for 39 years at Rhodes Chemical Company in
Merriam, KS supporting the pest control and turf care industries. His lifelong
commitment to the industry gained him great respect as a resource and trainer. He
was recently inducted into the Pest Control Hall of Fame. He will be
missed by his many friends and associates in the industry.
Fred was an active member of the Aldergate
Methodist Churck in Lees Summit and volunteered his time at local food
pantries. He enjoyed traveling and gardening and after many years away from the
farm, retired to the country once again. Fred was laid to rest next to his wife on
Friday, September 20th at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Raytown, MO.

Beverly A. Utz, 51, Savannah, Missouri, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 in St.
Joseph.
She had been employed as a support services technician with the River Bluffs
Regional Library in the Savannah and St. Joseph branches since 1987.
Beverly was born August 31, 1951 in St. Joseph. She had resided in the Gower
and Hemple, Missouri areas prior to moving to Chillicothe, and had lived in Savannah since
1980.
She was a 1969 graduate of East Buchanan C-1 High School. She was of the
Christian faith and attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church in St. Joseph.
Memberships include Beta Sigma Phi, Xi Zeta Epsilon Chapter; Kodiak Kadet 4-H
leader for 15 years; she had been a Girl Scout Leader for several years; and she was
involved in numerous school activities.
On October 3, 1969 she married Ted Utz, who survives of the home.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, Watson and Dorothy (Sherwood) Fortner;
daughter, Gwyndolyn Utz; granddaughter, Courtney Proffitt; and two infant brothers, Watson
and Larry Fortner.
Additional Survivors: daughters, Tabatha Proffit, Savannah; and Sarah Utz,
Kansas City; sister, Peggy Rapp, Easton; five grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.

Donna Jane (Harris) Stanton
Donna Jane (Harris) Stanton, 66 of Napoleon, MO passed away Thursday, September
19, 2002 at the home.
She was born on September 10, 1936 to Jasper A Harris and Alma (King) Harris in Clay
County near Paradise, MO.
Donna graduated from Plattsburg MO High School and attended Graceland College and
Business College.
On May 27, 1961 she was united in marriage to Wayne D. Stanton, Jr.
Donna was active in the Community of Christ congregation in Holden, MO. She
enjoyed genealogy, crafts, and family reunions.
Donna was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband,
Wayne, of the home, two sons, Keith Wayne Stanton and Kelvin Vinson Stanton of
Napoleon, MO; a brother, Jasper C. Harris Sr., Quartzsite, AZ, a sister Dorris Ann Mangum,
Independence, MO, and many other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held for Donna at the Community of Christ congregation in
Trimble, MO on Sunday, October 6th at 4 PM. Donations are suggested to Outreach

Esther Evans
Esther Evans, 86, of Plattsburg passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at her residence
succumbing to the affects of cancer.
Born and raised in Plattsburg, Esther graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1934, and
then attended McPherson College. After one year, she moved back home and sought a job in
Kansas City. She was hired as a waitress in the famous Fred Harvey's Lunch Room at Union
Station, where the girls were known as Fred Harvey girls. She later would go on to manage
the restaurant at the Commonwealth Hotel in Kansas City before getting married and moving
back to Plattsburg. She owned an operated Evans Restaurant in Plattsburg and later was
employed as the office manager for Sur-Gro an agricultural fertilizer and chemical
distributor. In July of this year she was honored during a trip to Union Station by
receiving a key to Union Station in recognition of her work as a Fred Harvey girl.
She was married to George Evans in 1939 who preceded her in death. From this marriage
three children were born George K., Jr., Charlie, and Carolyn.
Later on in life, she became an avid quilter, designing and making over 100 quilts,
including one which used 125 year old quilt material passed down by her family. She was
member of the Northland Quilt Guild and the Church of the Brethren, and was a direct
descendent of the founder of the church.
Also preceding her in death were: her parents, Benjamin Franklin and Lizzie (Orr)
Shirk; a son, George K., Jr.; a sister, Pauline Cochran; two brothers, Emerson and Wendall
Shirk; and a great-granddaughter, Christina Sledd.
Survivors include a son, Charlie and his wife, Mary, of Overland Park, KS; a daughter,
Carolyn Adams, and her husband, Lloyd, of Grandview, MO; seven grandchildren, Marsha Anne
Sanders, Timothy Adams, Elizabeth Anne Adams, Nancy Anne DalPorto, Lora Anne Adams, Ryan
Evans, and Matthew Evans; three great-grandchildren, Joshua Sledd, Cara Del Parto, Enzo
Del Parto; and one great-great grandchild, Skylar Sledd.
Family visitation was held on Sunday, Sept. 21, with funeral service at the Bailey Cox
Family Funeral Service in Plattsburg on Monday, Sept. 22. Burial was in the Brethen Church
Cemetery north of Plattsburg.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society.

James L. Johnson, Sr.
Jim Johnson died at HRMC
in St. Joseph, Missouri on Saturday, September
21, 2002.
Born in Pattonsburg, Missouri on
August 21, 1933 to James D. (Bud) & Fern (Walker) Johnson.
Jim graduated from Pattonsburg High School in 1953; he entered into the Army and
served as a Military Policeman in Korea.
On February 19, 1958 he was married to Ann Greer and
the couple resided in Lathrop for most of the next 30 years, where Jim served as a city
police officer in the mid 1960s. Jim made over the road truck driving
his career and semi retired in 1995. He moved to rural Plattsburg in 1998 where he
resided until his death. He drove over the road part time until July of 2002 for
Mattco Transportation in Kansas City.
His parents and his wife Ann preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son &
daughter-in-law, James L. & Theresa Johnson of Holt; four daughters and
sons-in-law, Ava & Walter West, Beverly & Bob Swallow both of rural Plattsburg;
Caroline & Neil Liggett and Charlene (Charlie) Johnson both of Lathrop; one sister
Elizabeth Helgen of Lawson; one brother David Johnson of Belton; and a very close
friend, Joy Johnson; eleven grandchildren ; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Graveside services and
interment were at 10:30
am Tuesday, September 24th at the Lathrop Cemetery in Lathrop. Military
Services were held at the graveside under the auspices of the Stewartsville V.F.W.
Robinson Beeching Post #508. Arrangements were made through the Bailey & Cox
Family Funeral Services in Lathrop.
Harriet H. Schmidt
Mrs. Harriet H. Schmidt, 77, of Liberty, passed away with
grace and dignity in her home on Monday, September 16, 2002.
She was a graduate of North Kansas City
High School and was a long time member of the Avondale Methodist Church, with a
quiet, profound and everlasting faith that sustained her through life as in her final
illness.
On August 17, 1944, she married George W. Schmidt
of Liberty. She became a loving and caring wife and mother who was deeply
devoted to family and friends. Her gift of giving, joy of living and ebullient sense
of humor will be remembered always. We will all miss her more than words can
express.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
Douglas & Marion (Culver) Harbison, her daughter Vicki Susan Schmidt and
her sister, Mary Lou Leimkuhler.
Surviving are her husband George and
daughter Carol Johnson.
Private graveside services were held for immediate family only
at Greenlawn Cemetery in Plattsburg. Arrangements were made by Cox Funeral Home in
Plattsburg.

Helen D. Akers, 59, of Gower, Mo., passed away, Saturday, September 21, 2002 at
Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo.
She was born on July 25, 1943 to Harold and Ida (Pike) Akers near Gower, where she grew up
and graduated from Gower High School. She attended Platte Guard College in St. Joseph, Mo.
Helen continued living in Gower, where she made her home.
Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gower, and enjoyed attending the Gower
Goodtimers.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Helen is survived by one sister, Dorothy Witt and husband, Arthur, Gower, Mo., one nephew,
Charles Witt, Gower, Mo., and two nieces, Joy Shaver, Easton, Mo. and Mary Ray, Gower,
Mo., seven great nieces and nephews, and two great-great nephews, other relatives and many
friends.

Mary Bethene (Stubbs) Edwards, 76, of Gladstone, Mo,. formerly of Edgerton and
Smithville, passed away, Monday, September 23, 2002 at her home.
She was born on November 29, 1925 to Newlin Jackson and Beulah Bethele (Rule) Stubbs in
Platte County near Edgerton, Mo. Mary grew up near Edgerton where she ttended Franklin
Grade School and later graduated from Smithville High School.
On December 7, 1946 she was united in marriage to Homer E. "Buggs" Edwards, Jr.
After their marriage they lived in Smithville later moving to Gladstone where they made
their home.
Mary worked as an insurance clerk at the Gashland Clinic for many years. She was a
longtime member of the Little Platte Baptist Church in rural Edgerton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joy Hatfield
She is survived by her husband, Homer E. "Buggs" Edwards, Jr., of the home, one
daughter, Sharon Morvan and husband, Roy, two sons, Randy Edwards and wife, Carol, and
Greg Edwards and wife, Lori, all of Gladstone, Mo., twelve grandchildren and fourteen
great-grandchildren, one brother, Curtis Stubbs and wife, Elaine, Edgerton, Mo, several

Robert L. (Bob) Harris Sr. passed away unexpectedly on September 27, 2002. In

Bob was born on June 9, 1948 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was the son of Morgan E.
Harris and Mabel M. Soper-Harris, who both predeceased him in death. He was also
predeceased by a nephew Ryan Dean Hendricks. Bob lived his entire life in Plattsburg,
Missouri.
On October 27, 1967 Bob married Sheila Russell who survives him of the home.
Additional survivors include their children a son, Bob Harris Jr. and his wife Pam and
granddaughters Jordan and Megan and a daughter Shonna M. Eason and her husband Ron and
granddaughters Brittney, Bailey, Brooke and Sierra. Also surviving is Bob's Uncle and
Aunt, Robert R. (Cotton) and Connie Harris; his mother-in-law Helen Russell; and one
nephew Seth Hendricks son of Marsha Hild and Bob Hendricks.
Bob was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church. He was also a member of
the Board of Directors of the Plattsburg Country Club for the past 15 years and was
currently serving as the President. Bob was one of the instrumental people involved in
working to turn the Country Club into an 18-hole golf course. Bob had many things he
loved. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved golf and motorcycles. He loved
his work with Lawson Products and his many friends he made through his work.
The main thing so wonderful about Bob was his love for laughing. He was well known
for his wit, which was unsurpassed by none and enjoyed by all. The wheels were turning all
the time. There are no adequate words to describe how much Bob was loved and will be
missed. The huge void left in our lives will be forever. We love you Bob and will someday
be together again.
Funeral Services were held at 2PM Tuesday Oct. 1,2002 at the Broadway United
Methodist Church, Plattsburg. Burial was at Green Lawn Cemetery Plattsburg.

Lloyd W. Adams
Lloyd W. Adams, 66, Grandview, Mo. died Sept. 24, 2002 at Liberty Hospital.
Services were held at 11 AM, Sat. Sept. 28, 2002, at St. Matthew Presbyterian
Church, 2217 High Grove Rd., Grandview, Mo. A graveside service was held at 3PM,
Sat., at the Brethern Cemetery, Plattsburg, Mo. The family suggest
contributions to the American Cancer Society.
Lloyd was born March 7, 1936 in Kansas City, KS. He was a Supervisor of
Employee Relations for the FAA and retired in 1994. While with the FAA, he was
awarded seven times for exceptional performance, three cash awards for special acts and
the 9th Annual FAA Administrators Award for Excellence in EEO. He was a U.S.
Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd
E. and Elizabeth V. Adams, and his beloved in-laws, George K. and Esther E. Evans.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Adams, of the home; son, Tim E. Adams, Grandview, Mo;
daughter, Elizabeth Anne "Becky" Adams, Gladstone, Mo; Nancy Anne Dal Porto,
Grandview, Mo; Laura Anne Adams, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Cara Elizabeth Dal
Porto and Enzo William Dal Porto, both of Grandview, Mo; sister Mary Elizabeth Adams,
Colorado Springs, Co; brother-in-law, Charlie Evans, and his wife, Mary, Overland Park,
Ks; and a very large extended family.
Lloyd had been the father to many other girls. He was always there to give
them a hug, words of encouragement and most of all, love. As they grew up and
got on with their lives, he was still their Dad. Mr. Adam's wife is the former
Carolyn Evans of Plattsburg.

SARAH E. NORRIS
Sarah E. Norris, 60, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Gower, Mo., passed away,
Thursday, September 26, 2002 at North Kansas City Hospital.
She was born on, December 18, 1941 to Harold Rotchford and Alma Lee (Poage) Smith in
Keokuk, Iowa. Sarah attended school and grew up in Gower and in 1959 graduated from Gower
High School.
On December 15, 1965 she was united in marriage to Jim Norris. After their marriage they
lived in Gower and in 1975 they moved to Kansas City where they made their home.
Sarah worked for Polsky Motors, St. Joseph, Farmland Industries, Kansas City,
Ingle-Gregory Builders, Gower and General Heating and Cooling, North Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Gene R. "Twister" Smith
and one sister, Helen L. McDaniel.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home, two sons, Darren Lee Norris and James
Craig Norris, both of Kansas City, one brother, Harold Lee Smith and wife, Barbara, Gower,
one sister, Mary Jo Bent and brother-in-law, Don McDaniel, both of Kansas City, Mo.,
several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held 11:00 A.M., Monday, Sept. 30th, at the Hixson-Klein Funeral
Home, Gower. Burial at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Gower.

GEORGIA BODDE
Georgia Hessenflow King Bodde, 82, of St. Joseph, Mo., passed away, Monday, September
30, 2002 at the Gower Convalescent Center.
She was born on June 27, 1920 to Earl and Adah (Gentry) Hessenflow in Grayson, Mo., where
she attended school and grew up. She later attended Cosmetology School in St. Joseph.
On April 2, 1935 she was united in marriage to George W. King. After their marriage they
lived in Edgerton, Grayson, and St. Joseph, and in 1956 they moved to Gower where they
made their home. Her husband, George, passed away on December 22, 1977. On January 12,
1989 she married Gerald J. Bodde. They lived in Gower, Eufalua, Ok., for eleven years, and
in 2000 they moved to St. Joseph where they made their home.
Georgia worked for Noma Lights in St. Joseph, and later owned and operated Georgia's
Beauty Shop in Gower for 30 years.
She was a longtime member of the Gower Christian Church.
Georgia was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Paul, Carl, Eldon, and
Clifford Hessenflow, and two sisters, Emma Lee Fosher and Ruth Benner.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald, St. Joseph, Mo., one daughter, Melba Sue King,
Millbrook, Alabama, one granddaughter, Rana L. Krussow, Rosemont, Minnesota, one grandson,
Christopher A. Watson, Madison, Alabama, one great-grandson, Riley Bryce Watson, several
step-children and step-grandchildren, one sister, Grace Smith, Cameron, Mo., and one
brother, Howard Hessenflow, Dekalb, Illinois, several nieces and nephews, other relatives
and many friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 5th at the Gower Christian Church, Gower,
Mo. Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy (Kidd) Johnson (1839-2002)
Nancy Johnson, 63, Cameron formerly of Lathrop, died Saturday at her home in
Cameron. Born Sept. 8, 1939 in Lathrop, she was a graduate of Lathrop High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leon Johnson, Sr., her parents, Edgar and
Laura Mae Kidd. Survivors: sons, Leon, Jr., Lancaster, CA., Robert, St. Joseph
daughters, Crystal and Shelia, Cameron: sisters, Betty Scott, Lathrop and Katie Houston,
Liberty; 3 grandchildren.

Redia B. Copeland
Redia B. (Hensley) Copeland, 75, of Gower, Mo., passed away Sunday, October 6,
2002 at the Gower Convalescent Center.
She was born on July 20, 1927 to Charles Thomas and Lula Mae (Harris) Hensley in
Ozark County, near Elijah, Mo., where she attended school and grew up.
Redia then lived in Kansas City, in 1952 she moved to California, and in 1987 Redia
and her husband, Allen, moved to Gower where they made their home.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Gower.
Redia enjoyed the outdoors and working in her garden. She also enjoyed spending time
with her family and attending family gatherings. The greatest joy in her life was her
grandchildren.
Redia is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Herschel Burch and Jim
Channell, two brothers, Elmer and Claud Hensley, five sisters, Maggie Lewis, Agnes
Johnson, Delpha Long, Mary Buchanan, and Geneva Simpson.
She is survived by her husband, Allen, of the home, two sons, Reginald Burch,
Salinas, Ca., and Michael Channell, Longmont, Co., five grandchildren, Anna Lena, Rebecca,
Kylee, and twins, Kayden and Kaylen, one sister and best friend, Velma Morton and husband,
M.W. "Buster", Gower, Mo., and one sister-in-law, Pauline Hensley, Agency, Mo.,
several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home,
Gower, Mo.
